hi there .
welcome to the forum, and the firearms community .
congrats on the (R pal) .
what type of shooting your club offer might have a impact on sugestions for a new handgun .
My first hangun was a Glock 17 9MM .
It was a blast to shoot, real easy to learn on,very simple gun to work on and maintain and absolutly bullet proof .
the thing can cycle empty cases without jamming .
but simple is the key word heer .and as time went on i very rapidlly desired somthing with more to offer than just somthing to launch bullets from , as effective as it was I sold it and got The XD 40 witch I consider a better gun than the glock .
it felt better in my hand and i learned somthing about grip angle .
I eventually got myself a 1911 KImber Tactical custom II 45 ACP .and a 22 revolver and a beretta CX4 storm .and presently have a beretta 92 FS on layaway .
My point is you will probably want more guns than your buget can support ,just like every other gun nut i know , me included
My advise is figure out what level you want to start your gun shooting adventure and reasearch every gun in that class eg(pins, plates, pepper poppers, duling tree, ipsc, idpa,in door ,or just punching paper .
read and ask questions ,heer on this forum and others /brand specific forums and such .
I hope your having as much fun as i am
