So I finally got out with my Vanguard II in 257 Weatherby yesterday.
Loaded 110 ABs with Reloder 25, 115 Hunting Ballistic Tips with IMR 7828,
117 Sierrras and Speer 120's with Reloder 25.
All of these turned in groups under moa, with the Speers being the largest and
the Ballistic Tips the smallest. Best group was the 115 BT with 6x.x grains of IMR 7828
two consecutive groups right around ½" 117 Sierras at 5/8"... ABs about the same.
120 Speers made 7/8", with groups tightening as my loads got hotter.
All in all, I think I could learn to really love this flat shooting number. Dave.
 
What's not to love when you got a flat shooting rifle like that, and it groups tight. Sounds like a winning combination to me. I'm interested in that cartridge. I might pick up a Vanguard myself. Congrats on your new rifle Dave, cheers pete.
 
I love my Vanguard 257 WM. I shoot the Nosler Ballistic tips into 3/4 inch groups with 69.0 grains of IMR 7828. This is a very safe load as most books will push this a little higher. This is plenty fast out of my rifle at about 3400fps. Deadly combo on deer but don't take a super short range shot with this combo as there will be substantial meat damage. Enjoy this beauty calibre.
 
I grabbed one a while back before the price jumped and our dollar tanked... using H4831 and Nosler brass, tried 100 to 120 BT's, Accubonds, Barnes, Speer Grand Slam, everything shoots great.
Currently have some 87gr Hornady I'm trying to see how fast I can get them going.

Interesting! I did not chrony any of these loads, but my load with the 115 BT was 69.5 grains of IMR 7828. I will have to run it across the chronograph once the weather warms up a bit. I have no pressure signs either.
Just a question re your Vanguard. Does it have a typical Weatherby throat [I mean quite long] Mine is plenty long, just like Mark 5 rifles. Doesn't seem to hurt accuracy any...this is Good. Dave.
 
Do you guys mostly use the 257 for targets or hunting? Obviously it's a deer load but do any of you push it to bigger animals? Here in BC I'm not sure it would get used to its maximum effect on our fat deer in dense forests.

Roy Weatherby shot a cape Buffalo with one...but only once.
 
I'm sure some caveman has killed a buffalo like creature with a stick at some point. I, however, will not be recreating his achievement lol

Just wondering if this (cool) caliber is limited to targets and deer size game or if I'm underestimating it. I like the round but can't really find a good use for it for myself.

I would have absolutely no hesitation to smack a Moose or an Elk with a 115/120 Partition or 110 Accubond as long as the presentation was not going to involve driving
that bullet through heavy bone. Even at that, I believe the Partition would make it in. I have shot two moose with the 6mm Remington [100 Partition] and one with the
257 Roberts [115 Partition] Dave.

It's not much of a target rifle, bullets top out at 120gr with only moderately respectable BC's. Barrel life isn't exactly stellar either.
Game is one of those "can of worms" questions where one guy will relegate it to varmints, and the next will say it would kill dinosaurs.
I would use it on game that a 243win/6mm rem would be suitable for but at extended ranges.

I watch the 280 lb whitetail buck gets smacked with a 257b this fall bullet went through and through the chest left a very large exit hole. I would have no issues going after moose or elk with a good bullet
 
I'd sure like a Mark V deluxe in .257 for pest whackin' and plinking using reduced loads. IE: 22.0 gr of Trail Boss topped with a 75 gr HP. Good for 2100 fps and decently accurate on gopher sized critters out to 200 yds. You'll not cook the barrel in your lifetime with a clean burning load like this and brass life is extended huge. Think of it like a bigger & better .22 Hornet alternative.

Oh oh, I reckon a gun reduction sale is a coming to get a fresh .257 in me mitts.:runaway:

My Vanguard has a long throat too it shoots great,just starting some load development but so far so good.Its kinda become my favorite.I can see this gun being one you get super confident in shooting you just know it will hit what your aiming at.Enjoy
