I recently acquired a new to me Wby Vangard 1 in 270WSM. I have a VX1 -3-9x40 installed too.
It came with some Barnes bullets (100pcs)of 140 grn TSX BT.
It also had dies and a few once fired brass as well. I need primers..Fed or Win or take what I can get?
I need powder and found some reloading info recommending IMR7828SSC and this powder is available on Fraser St in Van.
So, my question(s) am I silly to work up a load based on the available components at hand or should I be looking game animal and max range.
In which case it will be 98% Mule Deer/White Tail and the remaining 2% Moose meaning Limited Entry Hunting here in BC.
Max range would be 300 yrds.
Load out to the lands or max cartridge LOA??
What am I missing or forgetting?
Thanks Much in advance,
Rob

It is always a good idea to base hunting loads on the game to be hunted. But 140gr .277 tsx bullets at around 3000 fps will is a very versatile loading. I haven't ever been to fussy about primer brands. Wss in Langley had some 8lb and 1lb of h414 as well as others if you are looking for different powder options. Imr 7828 is relatively slow burning powder and will only really be usefull in magnum calibers. If I am trying to really push a case to its limits I seat bullets to the lands or whatever the mag will feed.

magazine length, full case of IMR4831SC, primer of the month club, load for 3 of them and everything shot at rolled over quick, nosler partitions of course but bullet placement trumps bullet design as proven by all those cup and core guys from yester years

Ate a lot of Moose as a kid shot by my father with a 308 Model 99 Savage. Imperial 150 grain ammo.

I am sure the 140's at 3000 stomp that load.Aa perfect gun for the south province. If it is a lightweight gun, it would make a great sheep gun. The only spots here i could see this being too little gun would be the North East; long shots on seizmics and critters that want to eat you.

The 270 win is to BC what the 7mm Rem is to Alberta, the standard. It will kill anything you need it to with most bullets if placed properly. You will have more than enough muzzle velocity and energy to drop whatever crosses your path.
I would do a little online research and see what the go to powders are for the 270 wsm and 140 class bullets and start there. Pick a magnum primer like the Federal 215 or the WLRM and use those.

If you can find Reloader 17, I believe it was specifically designed for the wsm cartridges.

130gr. nosler partitions with a stiff load of RL22 or IMR7828 will get you in the 3300 to 3400fps range...That will make mice to moose spend the winter in your freezer.

Russ...

Accubonds over IMR 4350 Max or near max loads ( properly developed of course ) and just off the lands.
Big Bull moose was very yummy.Deer make great sausage.

Did some Barnes over IMR 4831 for a friend. Left them as long as we could, just off the lands. 65.5 gr of powder.

Shooting sub moa out of a Tikka.
I use magnum primers in everything I load for all the time.

I use 68 grains of old style 7828 in mine with 130 Ballistic Tips. Velocity is scratching on 3400s door, and nothing shot with it has asked to get shot again. Haven't shot it much past 650 yards but it was still hding in there at that distance. Put one square through a black bears shoulders from 50-60 yards and it exited, so I quit worrying about bullet blowup at close range.

Been reloading 270 wsm for about 5 years now .
140 gr accubonds ,fed 215 primers over some retumbo
also had good groups win 780 supreme and 130 tsx
tikka t3 270 wsm
