Hey folks...
Have a nice 721 in 300H&H. I've been putting off loading anything for it, but had a rainy weekend and figured I'd get something started.
Working with new Hornady brass, run through Redding FL sizer, trimmed back to 2.840".
I seem to be having extractor problems, which I gather are not uncommon with this model. About 75% of the time, the bolt closes hard on a dummy round, and then doesn't extract. Round pushes out easily with a cleaning rod...doesn't seem to be hung up in the chamber or anything, and no strange marks on the brass that I can see. The other 25% of the time, bolt closes easily, and the cartridge extracts cleanly. Doesn't seem to have anything to do with the dummy rounds, as one round will work fine, then not work next time. I can't find any variations on cases or dummy rounds that would contribute to the problem.
Was wondering about maybe too much spring on the ejector...would that contribute to the hard bolt closing? I've seen some posts about taking a couple coils off that spring.
Does one need any special tools to disassemble that bolt? Looks like a roll pin holding things in place. I'd imagine knocking that out causes the plunger to enter near Earth orbit?
I honestly don't know what the extractor is supposed to look like...I took some pics and posted them here: https://imgur.com/a/K7th5gl
To me, it almost looks like something silver soldered at one end by the ejector plunger, but maybe that's what it is supposed to look like. What I think is the extactor ring only appears to go about 3/4 of the way around the inside bolt face relief...again, not sure if that is normal or not.
