My father-in-law gave me his Benjamin - Sheridan 397 with a Bushnell 3-7 x 20 on the weekend.
I've never owned a good airgun before and I was wondering what I needed to do to clean/maintain this thing to keep it working well for a long time.
I did read online from a place that was selling these, that you should store it with one pump, any truth to that?
Thanks

Is it an older model with the bent metal trigger guard? I used to have one for years they are great little guns still not sure why i sold it now but thats besides the point.
There isnt a lot you need to do to maintain it since its brass and then coated. Also taking it apart isnt a good idea unless it doesnt work. Its easy to do a lot of dammage to the roll pin that holds the pump arm in.

All you need to do is get a little tube of pellegun oil from can tire. Put a drop on the piviot points on the arm every now and then and a small drop on the rubber piston seal you will see when opening the arm all the way. Also a drop on the breech screw.
You dont need to do it often just when it gets dry.

I always stored mine with a pump or two in it the idea being that it will keep the piston chamber seal expanded.
Other than that i didnt do anything else to mine except swap springs in the trigger unit to a lighter one.
Do all that and like i said its not much and it should preform for many years.

I found when i shot it 4 pumps was enough for plinking out to 20 yrds. You dont really need to pump it 8 times every time you use it. You end up getting a little tired.

Enjoy it.

Glad i could help

Yes put away the awful wd 40 and never let it near another air gun again.

Thanks for posting that link. Ive never seen the guts of the new sheridan trigger unit.
The older variant that being 10 years and more was nothing but a simple lever style.
Not much to it.
