An "as new" and "new to me" addition to my combat shotgun sub-collection arrived today after I managed to intercept the community mailman while he still had the package on-hand! Excellent start to the day.... In any case, upon unboxing the very carefully packaged contents I was extremely pleased to find that this shotgun does not disappoint! To say that it is immaculate would be a gross understatement. I would be surprised if this gun ever saw more than a box of shells before being cleaned and put away for almost 40 years.
This particular example of the Deerslayer Police Special was manufactured in 1987 with the Military Parkerized finish, the somewhat rare full-length 8-round Magazine, and the Magazine Disconnect which allows "slam-firing" upon Pump closure for as long as the Trigger is held down and there are shells in the Magazine. Renowned for their accuracy with Rifled Hollowpoint Slugs, the Ithaca 37s with a 4-round Magazine quickly became the iconic Police Shotgun of the late 1960s, 70s and 80s. Of note is the fact that only the Ithaca Military and Police Guns have plain Receiver sides. All of the commercial "Featherlite" Versions have bird hunting scenes roll-marked into the sides of the Receiver, which I find somewhat off-putting. So I had to locate a Military and Police example of the iconic Model 37, which given their rarity in any condition, is a task in and of itself! I waited quite a while for this one to pop up on GP, I am quite happy with the deal struck and the speed of the transaction. The seller was excellent to deal with throughout. It wasn't exactly cheap, but then the best examples seldom are.....
