New to ownership, what's the process?

So about a year and a half ago I got my restricted PAL since it was being run at my college and our program (Police Foundations) had a good relationship with the instructor. I'm not new to firearms, I do have experience in operating them and I've been interested in firearms my whole life.

Firearm ownership though, it's kind of overwhelming when you want to get right into it, especially with restricted firearms. You've got your ATT's, club memberships, transfer times if it's private sale, and it's damn confusing what you have to get done first.

As I'm in Kingston I'll no doubt be dealing with SFRC as they're pretty close, and although the EE has good deals, I want a new gun for my first.

What is the process for purchasing a restricted firearm? Do I need a club membership first? Is the ATT applied for at the time of purchase? Do I alone send away for the ATT or will the seller help out with it?

Firearms laws in Canada are a ####storm of rules and regulations, and I could use a little help.

No easy way of really explaining this; so I will give you the path of least resistance for Ontario.

1)You shouldn't have to get a range membership first, but do it anyway. The CFO has a "policy" that they want you to do that.

2)Buy your new restricted firearm. SFRC good choice.;)

3)Once your transfer is complete (first time may take a few weeks BTW) a STATT can be issued for pickup at the store and transport to your listed dwelling. Your firearm can also be mailed to your dwelling to avoid the STATT step.

4)The range you were coerced by the underhanded tactics of the CFO to join will have to apply on your behalf for your LTATT. They may require you take a safety course for that priviledge. (on top of any other safety course they may have made you take just to join)

5)Wait patiently for your range ATT rep to get around to sending applications to the CFO. (some only do it a few times a year)

6)Wait patiently for the CFO to send the LTATT to your range.

7)Drive to range to pick up your LTATT.

8)Drive home to get your gun.

9)Drive straight back to the range with your now not-so-new but still in the warranty period gun.

10)Punch holes in paper of your choice.

**If you have a bit more bravado (and a lot of time) you could skip step one and just demand your right to buy the gun and get an ATT to whatever range you feel like. Might take some time though...

Thanks for the help. Looks like I'll be making a trip to the FRPC for a bit of info in the next week or two.

Didn't read too much of that linked topic, but I hope he succeeds in what he's trying to accomplish. I've neither the time or patients for such tactics. And as a 21 year old who wants to be a cop, that kind of governmental rabble-rousing probably wouldn't bode well for me.
