New to Production Div. IPSC shooting

Hey guys,

I want to buy my first (IPSC) pistol soon. My father and another friend are all getting into the sport together, although I'm not 100% sure what to get...

I'm set up for reloading 9mm, and cast bullets seem to be half the cost of FMJ everywhere I look so the Glocks and XDs are out the window as options. I want to shoot Production Division so what are your favorites?

My dad shoots a K-100, my friend shoots an SP-01.
 
While I don't own one, the SP01 is the one I'd vote for. I know many people who shoot them and they are great. From what I understand you can shoot cast bullets in a Glock but you have to spend a little more time cleaning the barrell.

I have owned 3 XDs and while I never shot cast bullets, they would be my choice simply for the fact that the magazines seat easier than my Glock's when fully loaded and don't explode like the plastic bases on the SP01s when they hit hard surfaces and are cold.


You should really shoot as many different guns as you can before you purchase. What works for me may not for you.

I also shoot a K100. I think if you try it and the SP01, you will find one of them strongly appeals to you.

If you like the K100, Freedom Ventures should be getting the new GP6 in shortly.

By all means try a Glock, an M&P, and any other DA first shot gun you can find, but my gut suggests your pic will be close to home.
 
SP-01 only if your ego can stand the fact your aren't winning and it ain't the gun. I use a M&P and a Tanfoglio "L" both in 9MM and the reason I am not Master yet has to be the gun....but I am about to get a Shadow!

Stock2 is a great gun....so is the shadow.
I am getting a new HK P30-L soon,...I can see the new hK being a competitor on the polymer segment of production guns.
 
In addition to what others have said, I would not hinge the pistol you end up with on limiting it to shooting cast lead. It is very likely if you shoot a lot or in doors, you will want to pony up the extra few dollars per thousand to go with a jacketed bullet.
 
Thanks for the replies guys, I appreciate it! I'm going to check out my friend's SP-01 for the first time today, I won't be shooting it but I can get a feel for how well it points.

Hi beltfed, I'd really like to be able to consider something other then cast bullets but for a student looking to shoot 500 rounds a month it's the only choice unless I can find jacketed bullets for an equivalent price. Although I've heard tell of a local who casts a large enough quantity to sell them.
 
I have a SP-01 Tactical (decocker model) and although there aren't as many out there I really like mine. Shoots great and tough as nails. I don't think you can go wrong with a CZ.
 
I'd love to have the Tactical model of the SP-01, I prefer internal safeties and decockers to a manual safety. I got to grip both the SP-01 and the K-100 a few days ago and I have to say the K-100 wins the battle for ergonomic supremacy, the finger grooves being the key factor. The weight of the SP-01 was nice, it felt like it would recover from recoil a lot quicker then the K-100. Although I think I liked the K-100's safety better, it toggled back and forth from on/off much easier, the SP-01's safety was smooth but it required more work to move. I think that a wrap-around rubber grip on the SP-01 would make it a lot nicer, is this legal for Production?

Oddly enough they both fit very nicely into an Uncle Mike's G21 holster!
 
If you want the option to shoot lead, then consider the Tanfo Stock II. The polygonal barrels in these work very well with lead, and you don't have to spend your evenings removing the lead deposits from the bore.
 
Out of my price range unfortunately! Even a used SP-01 around $650 is pushing it for me ha ha. I'm just keeping in mind that I'll still have to buy 3 more mags, at least, a holster and at the same time pull together everything I need for my first hunting season... Somewhere a long the way I'll find the money to pay for school too.

You can't put on a grip that changes the profile of the factory grips (or factory options)

...so short answer for the SP901 is no...

The good news is...you would get tired of it pretty quick anyway :cool:
 
Hahaha I'll take your word on that.

This Sunday is the definitive day for me, I'll be shooting some factory ammo out of both pistols. I'll post up some after-thoughts and pictures. Thanks for the help thus far!
