New to reloading, Is this normal?

If I did that (which I have) I would think that I used too much case lube, so... I would use less lube the next time I resized brass. If I had that piece of brass I would still use it, I'm not sure what you might do. Happy Easter.
 
Hi Rob, those dents are from using too much sizing lube, You just need a thin coat all around the body, and none on the outside of the neck only the inside .
 
That looks like too much lube.
I don't roll my brass in the pad, I only touch the mouth to the pad. The only lube on the outside is from my fingers.
Less is more.
 
Try the spray lube....it's way easier and less messy than rolling the cases on a lube mat. I find the spray lube works great if you stand the empty cases up and spray them from 3 angles from a downward angle of say 45 degrees so some lube also goes inside the neck.
Yes, the dents are from excessive lube, make sure you clean the excess lube from the inside of your dies as well.

Enough lube on your fingers too make it feel annoying is usually enough to cover a few cases just by handling. Like the others said too, keep lube OFF the outside of the neck and shoulder. A little wipe around the inside of the neck with a lube-moistened Q-tip is all you need.
 
Rob, sounds like Lee lube. I use it too. What I do(after I made dents) is get some lube on my fingers and lube 5 or 6 cases. When there's little to no lube left on my fingers, I pick up the lubed cases and spin them in my fingers again to get any excess off the neck and shoulders, if there's enough lube on my fingers I'll do a few more. Then I size those 5-7 cases and go again. I do also lube inside necks with a q-tip, which is easy to go back a few cases wipe any excess and lube a couple more. I run a bore brush inside the necks after I chamfer the mouths the clean any excess lube or brass filings from chamfering. I hold them with the mouth down when I do this to ensure no brass filings from chamfering fall into the flash hole. Only guys who've never re-loaded have never dented brass.

2 or 3 drops of lube on the pad is ample.
The video suggests a teaspoon . . . not on your life. There is not that much cost involved but they do sell lube. My original container is now 25 years old.

Yup. Welcome to reloading. Happens more on magnum cases than others. Bigger the case the more lube u will need but that's the price you pay.

As all mentioned. Just a but too much lube.
 
Everyone's covered the lube thing pretty adequately :) I find the RCBS case lube pad helps hugely, I throw 6 cases on there, a quick roll one way and they're done, almost impossible to over-lube, and your hands stay moderately cleaner. Someone suggested to me before to use powdered graphite in a pill bottle with some small (#7 or 8) shot, a quick dip of the neck in there gets it perfectly lubed, and the powder won't stick to it when you load the case. I'm about to try it.

Here's a little tip for rimless cartridges from this recently graduated newbie: If using second hand brass that's been shot in a sloppy chamber, you might find that it still won't chamber after setting your re-sizing die up as per manufacturer. What you need to do is keep turning the re-sizing die in 1/4 turn at a time, effectively 'bumping the shoulder back' slightly more every time, until the case will chamber smoothly. At this point you have it re-sized (and head-spaced) perfectly to your chamber. Another way to accomplish the same thing is to take a shell fired from your gun, mark the shoulder with permanent marker, and repeat that process just until you have a ring around the shoulder worn through the marker. This doesn't necessarily apply to your 30-30, but if you get into rimless or belted mags, it's good to know.

Get a plastic pail with a lid. (Ice cream container is good size for pistol brass.) Dump in a bunch of brass, about half full pail.

Squeeze out a bout 1" worm of lube (no more) and smear the lube around the top half of the pail.

Put lid on and swirl the brass for about 30 seconds. All cases are now thinly lubed, including a little bit inside the mouth, so the expander button is lubed.

Low tech and fast.
