New to Reloading

I am just getting started in reloading and have some questions.The equipment list I have so far is a lee 2001 Challenger press ,powder scale,Pacesetter die set,Primer pocket cleaner,chamfer tool, case lube,and powder funnel.Are there any other pieces that I need?I have access to reloading manuals through the library.

Also,I notice that reloading manuals show there load velocities for a .30-06 are in 24" barrels ,however my Ruger has a 22" barrel.How much difference will this make?

I will be reloading for hunting deer, sheep,and elk and was looking at using a 165 grain bullet.What would be some good bullet powder combos that you guys have found to work well?

Not enough to make a difference. Depending on powder, bullet, and a whole bunch of other things, somewhere between 30 and 70 fps.

Depends on the individual rifle...

Well you got all the good stuff, I had real good results using 57 grains 4831 and cci primers in the Rugar that I had ,3/4 in groups, Wished now that I kept it but will one day find another 77. Just my thoughts.

Oh I forgot a Very important part of all this, The bullets I was using were sierra 165 grain boat tail. Sorry about that in case you were using a heavier bullet?? My mistake
 
Lee Tools

I have been a handloader for a lot of years and the best hand tool I own is the Lee auto prime. Got one when they first came out, wore it out and got another one. A good digital caliper will also add a lot to your overall success. You will find you use it for more than "over all length" measurements.

A very popular powder for the .06 and many others is IMR 4350. I shoot 165 grn pills with it and they work very well. My rifle likes the max load in the manual I use, work your way up to whichever load your gun likes. It's all good practice!
 
"...How much difference will this make?..." A couple hundred feet per second in velocity. Not enough to matter.
IMR4064 with 165 grain bullets is your friend.
Buy a primer flipper too. It's a plastic tray that gets them all ready to go into the primer feed tube. Got a solid bench?
 
Thanks for the advice,I will look into a auto prime.IU will have to play around to find out what my Ruger likes.I do know that it does not like any moly coated bullets in factory loads,it does like most boattails and T.B.B.C. in Federal factory loads.
