hey im kinda new to reloading ... wait thats a lie im a reloading virgin im haveing trouble on how to figure out the amount of powder to use. im going to be reloading 115gr fmj and im useing winchester 231 powder . i read up on it and most people say to find out how much one grain of powder weighs and multiply it by the amount og grain in the load for example i calculated its 0.0931 x 40= 3.724. but that does not seem right to me

I assume you're loading for a 9mm Luger? Hodgdon recommends 4.3 grs. of 231 with a 115 gr. bullet as a starting load and 4.8 grs. of 231 as maximum.
 
I don't believe most or any people say to "find out how much one grain of powder weighs and multiply it by" anything. One grain of powder will always weight one grain, and loads are usually developed in a Lab with pressure equipment. I would be cautious of people offering this kind of advice!


I would recommend you read a manual like Lyman 49th, Speer, Lee Modern Reloading etc. to get an idea of the powder charges that are safe, and other aspects of loading ammo. Lee does offer some info on how to calculate your own Cast boolit loads, but there is enough data published for 9mm already.
 
The term grain is a measurement of weight. Depending on the mass of the powder a single grain(a piece or kernel of powder) can weigh anything. 7000 gr equals 1 pound. Buy a good scale and weigh the charge of powder into the pan, or a good powder measure based on volume. Adjust the volume to get the weight desired. Before doing any of the above, buy a manual and read it twice.

Funny I assumed he was loading 357 mag. A good start before he gets to much information is to clarify that:confused:
 
now you see, gentlemen, this is where the manuals DIFFER- by quite a bit- my SPEER 11 shows 5.2 of 231 for a 115 tmj or jhp , assuming 9mm luger- the top end is 5.7- for 1191- 1125 for low end- and i can tell you for a fact that the 5.2 load will NOT push the slide back far enough on some pistols- as far as the calculation goes, i'd leave it exactly as that- some THEORETICAL calculation- it doesn't work in the REAL world-and i've been shooting since 1970
ie FORGET THE CALCULATIONS, USE THE TABLES, and DON'T GUESS- that's where folks get into trouble in reloading- EVERY TIME- that reloading book is your BIBLE, everything else is HERESAY
