New to reloading

Hi Guys,

About a year ago or so, I went and bought a dillon xl650 with a buddy with the intentions to reload thousands of rounds of handgun ammo. Unfortunately my buddy had other intentions (looking for profit selling reloaded ammo, not for the sport as originally intended) and I was bought out of the press. It wasnt a big deal, had lots of bills to pay and had sold both my handguns.

Now that things are a little more settled and I'm finally getting my first AR in the next month. I was hoping for some feedback on pressing my own 223. I've got a few manuals to read through and time / patience to do this right.

My idea was to get a single stage press and take my time learning the world before diving into a progressive press. Again, I have time to do each stage slowly and carefully. I was also hoping if someone locally (in the GTA) would be willing to give me some pointers / lessons hands on? Not really in this right now to crank out thousands of rounds at a time, just enough to keep me busy and develop an accurate load for my AR and possibly a load for a bolt action 223 (R700 ?) in the future.

Any thoughts on a good beginner single stage press? Materials to use / stay away from? I apprecaite any feedback / advice in advance.

Prophet River has a great deal on a RCBS press kit for $300. with a $50. mail-in rebate. It's about $150 off what some stores are selling the same kit for. I'm tempted to pick one up myself but have no clue on what I'm doing. I did pick up ABC or Reloading but haven't gotten around to reading it just yet.

FYI, I believe it is illegal for your friend to be selling reloaded ammo.

I think your idea of a single-stage press is a good one. If you plan on putting out a lot of bullets, a turret press is similar but modestly faster without being much more complicated.

Brands of reloading gear are very much like auto makers; there are people who will swear by Ford and others swear that Ford is pure garbage. Much depends on personal taste, IMO. If it matters, I bought an RCBS Rockchucker kit a long time ago and am still using most of it today - 100% satisfaction with everything but the lube system (toss the pad and go Imperial wax).

Is your buddy aware of the regulations concerning selling reloaded ammunition?

Thanks for the responses guys ! One of the members here PM'd me and offers a reloading course , I think I'll attend.

For those that reload .223, what type of yeild / pricing are you getting per round? Any recomendations on powder / projectiles to try?
