I'm very new to scopes and have a stupid question about mounting.

Just got a Vortex Crossfire II 2-7x32 and some Leupold Rifleman detachable medium rings (55860) for my 10/22.

I just went to mount the scope, got the bottom half of the rings mounted to the rail, put the scope on them, and put the top half of the rings on the scope.

I didn't bother putting the screws into the rings, because I'm unsure of something. Once the top half of the rings are on, they don't sit tight to the bottom half rings. Are they supposed to? There is about a good 3mm between the two halves. I hope this makes sense.
If it's supposed to be like this, how tight can I go without crunching my optic?

Anyone know of a good link with instructions?

Thanks, and sorry about the stupid question.

There are no stupid questions. Yes, there will be a slight gap between the top 1/2 of the rings & the bottom half of the rings. And, that gap will depend on several things like make or manufacturer or the scope you are mounting... No worries, the slight gap is normal.

As for how tight, I slowly tighten up each screw EQUALLY until I am comfortable that they are snug. You don't have to torque them to hell & back, just nice & snug.

Cheers
Jay

Be certain your gaps are even from side to side and not tight on one side with a big gap on the other.

Wow, thanks for the quick replies. I really appreciate it.

So I'm guessing a bit of blue Loctite on the screws would be a good idea? I still have a good supply of it from when I owned an XCR. :D

Yes, I use blue locktite on my setups as well. Put a drop on one screw & rub another screw against it to distribute the drop evenly between the two. You don't need much. And, as sheephunter said above, mind the gaps in your rings... Slow & steady gets it done right!
