Hi guys...

I am new to shooting and I am looking to spend 600 or less on a scope... I was fortunate enough to get a norma 308 that has only been shot a handful of times but I am not really sure what kind of scope to put on it as far as magnification and such.
any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Hi Hendy,

It depends almost entirely on what you are going to use the gun for. Will this be primarily a hunting rig? If so do you want to set it up primarily to be maximize long range capability? This would have a big downside if it is your main rifle, mostly in reduced field of view. What sort of loads will you be shooting?

Hey Spruce Grouse,
Yeah I have a .270 win that I think I will use for closer shots/ hunting in the bush.. I was thinking of using the norma for alpine, open area where long shots are possible. I would like to set it up for shooting distance but I am a student right now and more than 600 is not really affordable so just looking for best bang for my buck I guess

Hi Hendy (I accidentally posted with the 'puter logged on as my wife Spruce Grouse this morning!),

Check out the Leupold VX-I line or Bushnell 3200. That'll keep you well within budget with a level of quality and reliability that won't restrict your field use at all.

As Dan said, a 3-9 is classic for general/longish range. I have a VX-I 4-12 on more of a light varmint rig, and certainly on high magnification, the field of view would be restrictive for general hunting, but the low 4x (actually 4.something is what it turns out to be), I'd think it could be sensible for your application. I guess you wouldn't want this gun to get to heavy, as I imagine the kind of country you're talking about hunting could require a lot of moving about. I'd think that a 3-9 or 4-12 with a 40mm objective seems good.

I'm an easterner, though, and there certainly are others here with better alpine/open country experience. In fact I'd think of a .270 as an open country gun!

Because of the heavy recoil of the Norma 308 mag. I would suggest a well made scope no greater than a 3-9x40 or even a 2-7x32 with a fairly long eye relief like a Leupold. Phil.
