Hey guys I just did my cfsc and crfsc and mailed my pal/rpal form in and I was curious as to what my first purchase should be. I want to get a long gun/s first to practice my shooting and was thinking of getting a 10/22 take down or maybe a 12 gauge (870 or 590a1) but others have said get a rem 700 in .308 or a mosin 91/30. Im really torn but would love some suggestions and maybe a place to shop in Vancouver.

Thanks so much!

If you are like most you will end up with the usual all of them
First would be a 22 bolt to learn the skills , they will transfer well to larger calibers later
and 22 is a fun cheap part of a range trip.I would suggest a marlin xt or a savage cant go wrong
Second a fun semi auto 22 i have a few mossberg 715 t and a marlin 795 choice is endless here
not as accurate as a bolt but a lot of fun.
After that try out some shotgun mossberg 500 or maverick 88 get a taste see if its your thing.
and well i believe everyone should have a SKS and a mosin.
The sport will tell you what you really enjoy once you try
Next would be a larger caliber 223 or 308
savage axis or a stevens 200 if you can find one are great starts at reasonable prices
One thing for sure you will likely look back in a year or two and own most of these or some comparable models
I will leave the restricted side of the sport to others as i never really was interested but im sure others will advise
Good luck and safe shooting

I am leaning towards that 10/22 however the cost of a mosin or sks is VERY appealing haha, im also curious about ammo costs, i know .22lr is cheap but in terms of non corrosive ammo is a mosin or sks worth it??

I have many handguns and rifles, some very expensive but have learned the fun factor has nothing to do with how expensive the firearm is. Mosins and SKS's are fun, tough, inexpensive, easy to take care of, even with corrosive ammo which is no big deal at all. You will find .22's are fun, both pistol and rifle but before long if you are like me, you will want a bigger boom. My favourite inexpensive rifles are the SKS, Mosin, K31, VZ24, and Lee Enfield.

10/22 is definitely a good choice as a first rifle, then move into something more powerful such as a shotgun or a mosin or sks and finish off with a nice higher caliber rifle.

My first gun was a Ruger 10/22, they're great and the ammo is cheap :) I then purchased a Benelli SuperNova shotgun since it's a good gun that you can use on different game by using different ammo "bird shot/buck shot/slugs". And now my first handgun "Sig Sauer" P226 Legion 9mm for the range. Like others have said, you'll eventually have a bit of everything.

I was more into it for hunting so I got a .303 first. My second gun was a mini14 in .223 (I very much loathe that rifle), then I got a 10/22 and it instantly became my favourite. Then a browning X-bolt in 308, Remington 870, AND then the safes got bigger, and my bank account got smaller... starting collecting milsups, shooting pistols, so on, so on.

Since target practice is your purpose, I'd get some sort of 22LR bolt gun, 10/22 is great but for me, more then not I just spent time dumping ammo through it with little concern for my groups (And many others have done the same). A bolt gun will naturally slow you down, so you focus more on your fundamentals. As for a second gun, it really just depends what on what you're into. I kept my collection small for the first few years, mastered the few rifles I had. I would advise you to do the same. I have too many friends that are "collectors" and own dozens of guns but still cant shoot for s**t. Collecting guns is like a drug addition, its hard to resist the temptation, especially with all the great deals you can find on the Equipment Exchange.
