i have shoot skeet a few times up at the cottage, but never at a range. i am scared to go and make a fool of myself breaking rules or something. Does anyone know any good ranges near Ottawa that might offer a intro lesson to skeet shooting?

thanks

Just go to the range and tell them you're new to the sport. They'll set you up with some experienced shooters to show you the ropes. Everybody I've ever met out at trap/skeet ranges has always been helpful and friendly.

Everyone had a first time and I second Grouse Man's advice. Simply say you are interested in learning the sport but don't know how it's done. At every club I've been at someone will show you the ropes.

Here are some extra pointers:

Bring your gun. Just about any gun will do as long as it's 12 gauge or smaller and can fire two shots (e.g. no single barrels.) FYI, some clubs frown on tacticool short-barrel guns to the point of not permitting them.

Bring ear and eye protection and 2-3/4" shells, no heavier than 3 dram or with shot larger than #7.5. Have a shell bag or something you can wear to carry your shells during the round.

Don't load the gun until you are in the shooting position and no more than two shells in the gun at a time.

Relax and enjoy. Don't worry about hitting the targets just have fun.

Hey, I just did this for the first time at my home range, but it was trap not skeet. I just showed up at the right time and walked up to the first guy and introduced myself...within 10 minutes I had met everyone and we where shooting. I didn't hit much, but one fella gave me a few pointers and that allowed me to smoke a few..enough to win a prize!! My wife laught alot when I showed up back at the house with a fresh ham!!

Just get out there and do it

Folks like you that are sensitive enough to worry about breaking the rules will have no problems and be welcomed at any decent club. Good luck.

Get in there and go for it....If you make a fool out of yourself, make a note of those who laughed at you, then beat them in a competition later. Learn by doing.
Revenge!!!

You are more than welcome to come out to the Cannought shotgun range. All you need to do is fill in a visitors information sheet and you will be hooked up with an experienced shooter and you will go out an the course and have some fun. We are open Wed starting at noon and sundays starting at 9:30.

Hope to see you there.

Jeff

The NCRRA Skeet Section (Formerly know as the Ottawa Valley Trap and Skeet Club) has a club on the Connaught Ranges.

Map is here;

Like Jeff mentioned Wednesday afternoons and Sunday mornings are the shooting days.

Your best bet would be to stop in on a Sunday between 9:30 and 12:00 (better chance of having someone readily available to help you shoot a round). If that doesn't work, Wednesday afternoons will be fine, but you should call ahead as the start/end hours are not set in stone. (1 613 820 3804).

If you have any questions, you can post them here or PM me.

Brad.

I was in the same position as you a couple of months back - new to shooting but had done some back yard clay shooting. I contacted a local club and the Shooting Secretary was just great. Long story short, I turned up to watch first, then joined the club it was that welcoming. It was a bit daunting at first to shoot 'formally' and to understand what clays were going to fly where and when, but the senior member running the show was just fantastic. I was treated really well. Didn't hit much on the first try, and still not very good after 5 or 6 rounds but I'm sure it'll come and its great fun learning.

If my experience is anything to go by, the senior guys will take you under their wing and you wont look back.

Good luck and hope you have the fun I am having.

i got myself some ear protection, is eye saftey a must as well? Also, where could i get a side puch for ammo?
Eye protection is required at every club I've been to. And it makes great sense shooting skeet. Pellets can slip under the rim of a clay target and come directly back at you. Shoot skeet long enough and you will get stung by bouncing pellets.

As for pouch, a simple carpenter's pouch from a hardware store will do just fine.

.. is eye saftey a must as well? ..

Only if you want to shoot. :D

No one shoots (or even spectates) without eye protection. I have divots in my old lenses that tell a good story why that is.

Pouches, Ear Defenders, and not very comfortable eye protection are available at the club. Generally you will want to bring your own glasses. Sunglasses can be fine (if not too small). You don't need to spend a mint on high end glasses, but something that will stop a pellet coming back at you, and more frequently target fragments flying through the air in your direction.

Lebaron will probably have all of the above. I would just borrow a pouch until you decide you are going to regularly shoot.

Most shooters who try skeet for the first time make a score of around 11 on 25....so there is really no reason to get nervous about it....

American skeet is not so difficult, when you get used to it. There are only 8 stations...so learn to shoot them one by one.....

How do you come up with eleven?

I might have hit 5 my first time out.....

The first 100,000 targets are the hardest ones... after that they get somewhat easier.
