I was wondering whether I could get some advice about which rifles to buy. I've got shotguns covered so I'm looking for rifles only. I would like some advice on a range or rifles if possible. Something in a 22, something in a higher caliber, something that's a good bang for your buck (no pun intended :)). I'm not looking to break the bank, as I am still a student, nor am i soliciting anyone. Just looking for some advice from more experienced hunters.

First narrow it down.

Budget?
Do you care whether it's single shot or repeater, and what type of action - bolt, semi-auto etc.?

Do you just want to practice basic shooting on a range, or do think you may be doing some serious target shooting and competition in the foreseeable future?

Are you going to hunt? Varmints? Small game/big game? One rifle for each, or something dual purpose?

If you are hunting big game, a good used 30-06 bolt action is pretty versatile. Wide range of bullet grains and applications. Common and easy to get ammo.

There are numerous good .22 calibre rifles out there. Too many new and used for me to post.

I'm willing to bet that if you had $500 to spend, you could get both here on CGN in the exchange forum. Pretty reasonable to get into the sport.

Welcome to the sport by the way.......

for hunting, you need semi automatic. and for caliber, 300 magnum minimum. I would take a hard look at a Browning BAR. For a sight, you want fast target acquisition, so a red dot is the best option.

OK. THIS REQUIRES AN INSTANT BAN...........BAN THIS MOF :D:D:D:D:D:D sorry, did I spell MOF wrong goathouse?

Find a good, solid bolt .22LR. Some of the older ones are better built and more affordable than the newer ones.

After that get a good new or used bolt action .308/.270/.30-06 and you're covered. As a starter gun, avoid anything that says MAGNUM.;)
