Looking for advise as I would like to get into some sport shooting. Been around firearms my whole life but never really shot a lot. Was wondering if anyone could shed some light on the difference between skeet and trap, what would be a good shotgun to start with. IE o/u, semi, side by side etc

Thanks from a newb.

There are a number of different clay target games ... trap, skeet, sporting and five stand are the most common. The first thing to do is find out what is available close to where you live. What you buy for shooting them will be dictated by what you can afford to spend and how much you plan to shoot. If you are going to shoot 50 targets once a month, then just about anything will work. On the other extreme, you can easily spend up wards of $20,000 for a new dedicated combo shotgun and shoot 1,000 plus shells a week and travel all over the world to compete.

Oh dear. Vspronk, you might as well have just come and asked what the best religion is.

Look through this forum and you will find a lot of what you are looking for. Go out to your local club and talk to some shooters in person. They will be happy to talk to you and share all kinds of information.

Start with a gun that fits you well... go to your range see what people are shooting and ask if anyone will let you try one out.

Your probably looking at a semi or o/u. O/U is easily the most versatile, followed by the semi each can be used in any of the disciplines. I ruled out the pump which is still an option but given you said you were new you may not take that route.

Your price range will determine a lot as well, a typical rookie mistake is to buy a cheap gun and end up stuck with it and wanting something better. I realize some people cant afford better so try not to do that if possible. The bottom line is good shotguns cost money. But value can be had depending on how you look at it, for example higher quality guns also retain value better.
