I have mucho experience in using an AR, but never have built one from scratch.

Today I took the plunge and ordered a stripped Aero Precision lower.

Now, it is time to turn to my fellow Nutz for guidance. I'm not concerned on doing this on the cheap, as I realize building one will cost a whole hell of a lot more than buying a complete. This will be my winter/spring project.

I figure I will complete the lower first and then move onto the upper.

So far, I can tell I need:

-Buffer/buffer tube/spring/stock
-Mag Catch
-Take down pins
-Trigger Assembly
-Grip

Anything I am missing?

As far as the trigger mech goes, can they be bought as a whole somewhere? Or do I need to piece them together through different sources?

Thanks for all the help, in advance. It will be much appreciated.

Most of what you need to complete the lower is in the Lower Parts Kit (LPK) with the exception of the receiver extension (AKA buffer tube), the buffer and spring, if you buy a "complete" stock you'll get those, and the castle nut and receiver end plate. If you buy a stock, you'll need the extension, buffer, buffer (or return, or recoil)spring and a castle nut and end plate.

first off unless ur buying a norc, it is cheaper to build it ur self, i know i built mine for around a grand.
second, building it ur self gives u a real sense of pride.

u can go cheap, or top of the line from the ground up, its all up to u.
thats my 2 cents

also get over to ar15.com and print off the biuld it ur self book like i did, i wish i had one for my dak kit lol

I'm on my first build myself, and I am under the impression it will end up being cheaper than buying a complete for one simple reason: I get to buy everything ONCE...
I mean, I do not want the standard stock, forend, pg, sight, flash hider, charging handle and what else. you get to pick only what you want and you are free to get your parts wherever you want to get the best price on each of them.

As for the parts to complete the lower, Wolverine sells Daniel Defence LPK for 105$. I didn't find any cheaper (speedjunkiesracing did see his post below! :owned:) and the DD should have a Magpul triggerguard in it (something I would have bought separatly anyway).

We'll see what the total will be at the end, but ultimatly it doesn't even matter because I'll have exactly what I want.

im nearly finished my first build also. You say you have experience with AR's so Im assuming that you own one. You have the perfect learning tool sitting in your safe right now. Take it apart to every pin and spring and you'll give yourself an idea of what you'll need to complete your build! Then search threw the list of dealers at the top (Fabsports, Questar etc.) or Alberta Tactical Rifle and DlaskArms and order away!

I totally disagree, I find like anything more custom that it will cost you more to build it yourself BUT you will have exactly what you want.

For a straight out factory gun you cant beat a new Stag arms for the price/quality. It is easy to build a AR but like anything some peoples skills for even basic work are not very good and the other thing I see is cheapness to buy proper tools like the upper receiver block and AR wrench and a go no go headspace guage.

Norc ARs are like any Chicom gun they work okay buts it not really what you want, kinda like a okay girlfriend. She gets the job done but shes not really want you want and settling always kinda suks :)

If you want to keep everything stock you might be better off buying a complete gun indeed, but seriously, who does that? ;)
If you get a complete gun and start switching things around to get what you want it'll be more expensive in the long run. And you'll have a box full of unused parts, so before you know it you'll just start a 2nd build...

Another advantage to build it yourself is not having to ditch all that $ at once... altough I find myself ordering parts alot more ofthen than what was planned.

Thanks for all the help so far!

I plan on using the RRA Parts Kit - https://shopquestar.com/shopping65/shopexd.asp?id=1284&bc=no

I am very undecided on the stock. I like the Questar M4 Stock for it's price but I think I want to run a CTR. Not sure whether I should buy it all seperate, or the Questar M4 and then slap on the CTR at a later time.

Once I move onto the upper. What specific tools will I need? I have built many a bolt gun before so I think I can get it done. Maybe with a bit of trial and error.
