Hey Everyone! im thinking about getting an SKS from S.I.R. The only firearm I have is a 10/22 is it worth getting an SKS? if so is the SKS S.I.R. has a good deal? and good quailty? Also I heard they are a mess when you get them, and ammo is hard to find, is that true? any tips on what to do. Also i noticed that there are alot of aftermarket parts and stocks for the SKS which is the reason im looking at the SKS cause thats why i bought the 10/22 . If some of you guys can help me out on what to do and also post some pics of your SKS so i can see what it looks like with different aftermarket stocks.

Also i was thinking about getting the fiberforce stock and 10 boxes of FMJ fom S.I.R, aswell when i get my SKS. Is this stock good quailty, or should i go for there monte carlo stock

I can answer a few of your questions.

The SKS is a great deal and a great little gun. Everyone needs one. They may be a mess when you get them but it dosen't take long to clean 'em up.

Ammo is certainly NOT hard to find. Your not gonna get it at C-tire or Wal-mart but any gun shop is sure to have tones. Plus an entire crate of it is less than $200.

As for the stock...thats a matter of personal opinion. The orignal one looks best. The only stock i'd put on an sks is the tapco one though.
 
Its a great price fior a Russian SKS. Consider I paid around $350 for mine a yr or so ago. Stocks are usually very nice, not at all like the cheap Norinco Chinese ones. They will more than likely a laminated stock, or an original hardwood. Surplus ammo is usually easy and cheap enough to find. Soft points, a bit harder to find if you want to use it for hunting. As for after markets, there are many different kinds, though as posted before, I like the original, though adding a one inch pad is usuaully a good idea since most people find the stock a bit short. I could be wrong on this, but I heard that getting the after market stocks might be harder to get in the future. I am sure someone here will key in on this and have more info on this.

The SKS is the finest rifle ever made! :D

But seriously, it likely has the highest "value" factor available in Canada. It's cheap to buy, cheap to shoot, rugged and accepts easily available upgrades.
 
Great plinking rifle, you'll love it and so will your friends. I take lots of newbies to the range and they all love blasting clay pigeons off the berm at 100 yards with the SKS.
 
I have an older milsurp Russian Sks, well used and battle scarred. It is not as accurate as most Sks'sl as it was a combat issue rifle, but it is fun as heck. I put a plastic aftermarket stock on it for a better fit. I have a SIR order in since they first advertised them (I'm around #30 on the shipping list). I hope the rifle coming will be better as far as accuracy goes as most that I have seen shoot pretty good after they get a good cleaning. Now, if only SIR's shipment makes it here for the new delivery date.
 
large caliber plinker, not that accurate compared to some, but we all love em, lots of fun to shoot, ive got sum pics posted[ with lone-wolfs help] of a couple of my faves, check em out! Yes, i have another SIR russian ordered for my collection.......I dont need another but......The price is right & its not a matter of need anymore, its a matter of WANT.....Im weak...............
 
My first firearm was an SKS (Yugo)... Bottom line is ride her hard and put her away wet and generally don't sweat it, the thing is built like a brick sh*thouse. I'll probably be buried with that rifle.
 
I have a chinese (Norinco) sks that I bought years ago. I've kept it original, except for converting it from a 10 rd. mag to a 5. A fun large calibre rifle to plink with. Maybe not the most accurate rifle, but it does ok and it was cheap. Surplus ammo can be bought for it for a very reasonable price. About $200 or less for a crate(1000 rds.) Of course you can by better ammo for it, say from American Eagle, and some others which will improve accuracy a some. I would use that ammo for hunting in the bush. For decent plinking ammo can't beat the price of the crated surplus.

Remember though, Surplus ammo is usually corrosive, so clean your sks well after using it.

yes, all SKS are chrome bore with exception of yugos and early russian .

SKS with barrel greater than 18.5" barrel are non-rest and shorter are rest.
 
Pro:

Fantastic bang for the buck. Probaly the most gun for the least money in Canada today.
Wonderfully inexpensive ammo.
Battlefield proven and designed to be maintained by illterate Commie peasant conscript troops.
Chambered for one of the world's most successful military cartridges.
Historically interesting.
Loads of fun to shoot.
Integral bayonet is great for making antis wet their pants when you tell them that of course it's got a legitimate sporting purpose; it's for finishing off wounded deer and rabbits.

Cons:

Not spectacularly accurate.
Triggers are occasionally horrendous and usually nothing to write home about.
It's somewhat difficult to mount a scope to them (I went with a Scoutscopes.com scout mount and a Tasco red dot sight and have nothing but good to say about that setup, however).
Low Mall Ninja factor.
Non-existent snob appeal.
 
I ordered up a scout scope today. I am having it sent to a friends place in Florida, and my good wife will bring it home when she returns. Then I'll put a Burris Speed Dot on it. Yehaa!

Thats correct. I paid incl tax and shipping 62 dollars. If Marstar was even 75 bucks I might have ordered from them but at 100 plus tax plus shipping forget it.
