For someone who wants to get into reloading there own ammo, whats the best kit to buy? what are the essentials? and mostly whats a general start up cost, i just bout a carcano and ammo isnt really readily available so thats my main one right now, but ive got 303, 7mm, 30-30 30-06.

Buy the best you can afford to start out. If you buy a kit you will find yourself upgrading scales, tools , etc....

There are a lot of good presses. I have most of them.

The big cast lee classic is good the Hornady lock and load good and the rock chucker a classic std solid go too.

Than you will advenually want a casr trimmer and brass tumbler. Upgraded primer pocket cleared and some brass tools.

I like the lee hand priming tools vs the press prime system. But that's only a preference

Stay away from the lee anniversary press's kit. I had one and still do but it's in a rubber tub ?

Scales the 10/10 is good but find myself gone to a digital now. I went to dillon.

It all depends on what u are looking for. Quality is best and you will enjoy the experiece more if things work the way they should.

If me I would start with the RCBs kit. !

Go with lee or RCBs dies.

Should get you going and will last you a life time.

If your not going to shoot handguns,i would buy a simple single stage press kit.I have a lot of lee gear and the only part of the kit that is complete junk is the beam scale. Everything else makes adequate ammo and i also load for three handguns on my single stage.I shoot 160 handgun rds a week during the winter and have no trouble keeping up.
 
most likely not going to shoot handguns, might buy one in the future but no time soon, i want to get into reloading but theres so much, i just want to do it simply, even if it takes me a bit for as much shooting as i do, theres a milsurp shoot this summer i want to go to, and if i have to buy shells its gunna kill me, plus i want to start casting my bullets for my ross

With either of those kits, you will still need to buy a scale that is usable, the LEE scale is crap. As well, the Challenger press is not overly durable, if you intend to use it a great deal. If you must buy LEE, go with the cast iron Classic press.
 
Trust us all man ,, once you start it's like a bad virus.

If your only shooting that much. Buy your ammo.


27 years ago I bought a press for my 30-30 and 30-06 and a 22-250.

$$$ later and lol lol

On a serious note. If you don't shoot much really don't bother. Factory ammo is really good now days. Both match and hunting.

These kits are only starter kits. The press on that lee kit is like driving a bike with flat tires.
 
The best way to learn is to find a friend wiling to show you, after you have read a couple reloading books cover to cover of course.

the second best way is while your reading your manual, make a tool list as you read through the steps of reloading.

after reading a manual you should have a good idea what you need


the RCBS kit comes with a lot of good stuff but you will need a few more odds and ends as you go

Email or call Jerry at Mystic Precision (vendor here) and tell him what you are trying to accomplish. He knows the value of a your dollar and doesn't waste them. My brother and I have both used Jerry's advice and sales to start reloading, though with different goals. I hunt and shoot off hand mostly, my brother is into precision, but we are both happy with the service and free advice on the best and least expensive way to realize our goals. Each kit has some good pieces and some duds. Mix and match often works best.
 
I just bought a lee classic cast press to accompany my progressive and am very impressed. I would stay away from the challenger but the cast one is a great value. Probably what I like the most about it is that the primers fall through the ram so there is no mess. The only other press that does this is the Redding and it is alot of $$$$.
