New to Trap, looking for advice on shotgun

I think that once you start to break 25s and 50s on a regular basis, it is time to think how competative you want to be at your sport. You might then want to look for a gun that is built to last for life and is tweaked especially for you. Once you are at the peak of your game you will have less worry about changing or rebuilding equipment........or you can do what Arnold Reiger did and that was to kick ass with his model 37 winchester til it wore out then go to a used model 12 that he liked, and continue to kick ass.

Having a proper gun that fits you can make a difference of an extra target. You do realize to be competitive you had better be breaking more like 100 straight?

Guys, guys, guys,

Thanks for all the advice. Just to set the record straight, I'm only in this for the fun. I have no interest in competing and don't really have the time to practice more than once a week. I find breaking clays (when I hit them) to be fun and even if I miss, I still enjoy the experience.

I'm not necessarily going to rush out and buy a multi-thousand dollar shotgun but I am interested in eventually upgrading my 870 to something that is good value and versatile. Next week in Calgary, there's going to be a big gun show and I'd like to be able to know a good deal when I see it, hence all my questions about what people are using and what they think are good. As well, eventually I'd like to give skeet and sporting clays a try, so I'd like something that will work for that as well.

Thanks for all the advice.

What do you consider to be a "big investment"?

If you can save up a little bit, I would say get into a used Beretta semi-auto 391. You will use that gun for a long long time, and no need to get anything else for the other clay games.

They come up frequently on the exchange for 600 - 700$.
