Not new to the forums, but new to the area. Looking for a good range out here in the Durham region, preferably not something crazy expensive (house expenses are brutal :p)

Can anyone lead me the right way?

Hey,

I am in the GTA as well and looking at ranges in the same area. From what I am gathering two good choices are the Oshawa Skeet & Gun Club and Orono Fish and Hunt. Neither are crazy expensive. Perhaps some members can step forward and give you more specifics.

Orono is a great club. The Wednesday and Sunday shoots can be a bit of a problem for shiftworkers but there are lots of IDPA shoots on Saturdays to make the most of your range time. A range trip to Orono is as much a social event as anything else.

The Marksmans Club in Hampton near Oshawa is an indoor 25m range that is restricted to pistol and small-bore rifle. For me, the combination of the both meets my needs.

I don't belong to Oshawa Skeet and Gun Club but I have met quite a few satisfied members.

i like oshawa skeet and gun better then orono

They have got better, 5 years ago a leper with tertiary syphilis and pulmonary TB was more welcome than an handgun, black rifle or SKS shooter. But for a similar price to their membership, I get both the 24 hour indoor range at the Marksmans and the Outdoor fun of Orono.

Wow theres a club in Hampton? Where at?

Thanks for the helpful replies, I'll check into those clubs.

If you were interested in checking out the Oshawa club I could take you as a guest for a shoot one day. I have shot at both and am now back at Oshawa. It's nice to have a key to be able to go whenever you want during daylight hours not just Wed, Sat and Sunday.

It is true black guns were looked down upon there for some time. I recall trying to shoot my rifles and being criticized by other firearm owners for owning such "useless rifles" or military style firearms. Unless you were shooting a beretta silver pigeon or .300 wtby mag you were not part of the group there.

If you wanted to get out to the club let me know I don't mind taking someone out to shoot and check the place out.

^Just off Taunton Rd, between Hampton and the dirty Shwa.

I'm a member of Orono. It's got limitations, but it's a good club. Generally, very inviting and a good variety of shooting options at a reasonable price.

I've heard that the club in Newcastle has had a lot of upgrades, but don't have first hand knowledge.

Cheers,
DL

Exactly what he ^ said, the two clubs fit my needs perfectly for the same price as the Oshawa Skeet and Gun Club, except for the longer 300m range which I would love! And nothing beats shooting indoors in the winter!

Also, I have been helping spruce up IDPA at the Marksmen Club. Whoever is coming on Thursday better be ready for some serious excitement! w:h:

Seems like an expensive entry into the marksmen club though, otherwise I'd consider it. Safety course + an initiation fee? geez.

Welcome to whitby. I too am looking into these clubs. I've been to the marksmen club to watch a idpa practice and it looked like a good club for handguns. I'm going to check out Orono either tomorrow or Sunday, my only concern there is the Wednesday and Sunday only shooting.

Welcome

I'm in Whitby too.
I'm new to the hobby and asked a similar question. Got lots of responses and invites from the Orono members. They seem like a great crowd as has been said. My son and I will be visiting in a couple of weeks. I hadn't heard of the Hampton Club, but I may look into it. Outside is not fun in February :(

I thought the same thing after shooting at indoor clubs for the last 20 years, but shooting outside is awesome, even in Feb. One other thing to mention about Orono, we have all kinds of events, there is a classic military match being shot on the 19th, we shoot IDPA, PPC, Cowboy Action, we have a few 2,3 and 4 gun matches in the works so there is more then just Wed. and Sun.

If anyone is interested in checking out Orono, just let me know and you are more then welcome to come out and have some fun and see the place.

Steve, I meant no disrespect to Orono or any other open air range. I've spent a great part of the last 12 years in unheated/cooled equestrian rings 11 months of the year (we skip most July's for family vacation). I just meant cold is not my favorite temperature.
