bought a colt new service revolver in .45 colt. manufacture date of 1918. im going to pick up later this week, it will be my first wheel gun :)

The gun is currently in pieces in a tupperware and has a front sight silver soldered on... its in relatively good shape, and should be a fun one to play with, will have pics as soon as it comes in.
Cheers,
I

Nothing weird about a New Service in 45 Colt, that was the original 1898 caliber. Here's a pic of mine, made in 1942.. In 45 Colt

nice!! makes me more excited to get mine! should be end of week or so.... it was stamped on the barrel as .45 colt, will check when I get it.

beautiful pistol indeed! Your's has more original finish on the lanyard ring then mine has over the total exterior lol. But the bore is bright and she shoots well, so alls good.

Again, very nice colt!

Mine is an Eley, and it's hurting finish wise beyond. It comes with the registration from 1960 describing how "It was found under the floorboards of a house" in Eastern Canada. Functions quite well, but the finish is easy to picture in your mind.
Big guns, pictures don't quite get the size difference across. But I've several other Colts; an1892 and an 1895, they are minuscule compared to the New Service. Even my S & W 2nd model is way smaller in the hand.
Waiting for the updates

That is sweet.
What's it worth on the market?
Waiting for my RPAL and this is sort of what I had in mind for my first wrist shooter.
Or maybe a Browning 22...........nawwwwww

Hey, enjoy the New Service. It's a hefty beast, with a look that takes you back to the days of black and white movies and TV shows. Have a look for markings on the frame and cylinder when you get it. These were used by several agencies, including the RCMP and the Canadian military. Here are my Mountie and Royal Canadian Navy New Services. The former in .45 LC, the latter in .455.

Movie Trivia: The New Service was the revolver used to shoot the Movie Producer's bodyguard in "The Englishman's Boy". Pretty sure anyway, those are BIG revolvers.

I have never found them thick on the ground. Both of mine came from dealers, thanks to a timely visit to websites after they had been updated with fresh items. Even at the big Easter show in Calgary each year you see 3-4 S&W Hand Ejectors, but rarely one of the big Colts. Sniffers, then, have to be kept constantly in the air for the one here, one there pop-ups.

I would suggest that $500 could get you a commercial/civilian example, but if it has martial markings, especially legitimate Mountie markings, you're going to add a few hundred to that price.

Looking forward as well, to seeing the photos of the OP's new acquisition.
