New toy - pre 64 Model 70 Supergrade

Hi,

Just thought I would post a couple pics of my newest addition. I am usually a Winchester lever guy, but picked this one up this past week as I have never had a pre 64 Model 70. African Supergrade 458 Win mag. Made in 1960. The gun came from an estate, I think I has been put away since the 60s, The bore is like new, does not even look fired or very little, just few marks here and there. At least 98% overall condition. Guess they did not make many, from what I have read since getting it, just over 1200. Really do not know the Model 70s at all, but this has got me interested. Lots to learn. Quite a rifle.

Awesome looking '70 you have there. If you plan to shoot it I'd recommend loading some 300 or 350 grain bullets at .45/70 level. Maybe 1,900-2,000FPS. Also maybe check the bedding. Hey Aylmer QC, great town. Grew up there in the 1960's.

Thanks for the compliments. Yeah, no Grizz in these parts, lol. Lots of deer, turkeys and black bear. Maybe a bit overkill. I would like to shoot the old rifle, but am not set up for reloading. I see there is some 458 for sale in the exchange, but at $100 a box - or $5.00 a round - that would get pretty expensive, pretty darn fast. Is that the going price when you find factory loads? I see he has some Winchesters, I think Hornady, would have to look again. Not sure which is best?? Guess reloading would certainly be the way to go. With the young family and work though, I have no time to shoot these days, like to see that change sometime.
Yeah, Aylmer is not a bad town at all. Still too close to Ottawa and all the political BS for me, but I work in Ottawa and the wife wants to live on the QC, being a Quebeker herself. Just doing what I can to survive. Quite a few Bluenosers up here for work like me.

Definitely a handloading proposition. Cases are about $1 each. Using Hornady 300gr HP or 350gr RN, a round can be assembled for about $1.25 assuming you can get at least 1/2 dozen reloads from a case.
 
Great score on that MD 70 458 . As Longbranch stated make sure your double check the bedding on that rifle as they were well noted as stock splitting .
 
those rifles were known to crack their stocks. If you are going to shoot it a good bedding job should be done. Pillars are not needed. A secondary recoil lug would be a very good idea.

Keep in mind this is a $4000.00 rifle in the U.S., and all mods. will decrease it`s value.
