Ill start by saying... Mods, if this bongs in hunting section please let me know or move it...


Last night I finally caved and ordered a new toy,

A remington 700 sps tactical... With hogue stock and 16" threaded heavy barrel, chambered in .223 (from wolverine)

As well as 1120 rounds of "norinco" .223 / 5.56 55 grain FMJ (from Canada ammo)

I have a bushnell trophy xlt 6-18x40AO in vortex rings waiting for its arrival.


I mainly want to use this to stretch out from 200 yards (furthest i have gone with my .22 rimfire) to 500 yards ish.

I realize this ammo IS NOT the best ammo and I do not hand load.... But will this get me there?
Being new to this whole "longer range" stuff... I thought if start with this set up.

Did I make a mistake? Any input is greatly appreciated and taken into consideration.

FWIW, I was reaching 400 yards (or damn close to) with a savage axis, with STOCK piece of junk scope and American eagle 55 grain FMJ last winter... Granted not nearly every shot hit but was good enough to me (reffer to my you tube vids if there is any disbelief)

Take it to the range and see how it does. FWIW you should consider handloading. It is a lot of fun. I suck at it and I still enjoy it.
 
Just bought some handloading equipment and going the same route..

Hand loading for accuracy not just to save cash.. I think it's a very nice calibre..

Yeah me too. (Although I have not yet found precision.) Old dude an the range told me ".223 target shooting will do anything .308 will, only for cheaper." I'm not sure that's entirely accurate but I get his sentiment. Its a great starting point. Lots of component choices. Plenty of fun. The part I struggle with is not tinkering with every aspect of my rig between range trips so I can tell what has actually affected accuracy/precision.

Need my boy to get a little older so I can include him too...

It probably will, but you might get lucky and have it love it. 200 yards will be easy for the combo.

Pretty much right on the money. .308 is a little easier to load for in my experience. The small case for the .223 makes it more sensitive to variation in charge weight.
 
Congrats! Shoot her & have fun. If you're shooting off a bipod or bench rest, keep in mind that that hogue stock flexes a bit and it can (and probably will) flex and make contact with the barrel and result in inconsistent hits. If you're shooting off a rest, you can try and put the rest more in the middle of your rifle to help reduce the flex. Later on, you can either upgrade the stock or bed it. Look at bedding your scope rail if you go to a single piece rail.

I never thought to bed the rail before. I assume the point is just to eliminate the rail shifting or moving as a possibility?
 
Alright guys, just got a little update for ya!

Now that I recieved the rifle and ammo, I had to think about the optic.

I was planning on mounting a spare bushnell trophy 6-18 I had laying around but decided to give this rifle something it's deserving of
I stopped in at wholesale sports when the rifle showed up and I had to pick up some sort of base for my optic. So I picked up a weaver one piece picatiny rail, and some Leopoldo prw (?) rings, then I moved on to the optic. Decided to pick out a vortex viper PA (?) in 6.5-20x44.

The scope is sitting a little higher than I wanted it to but it had to clear the bolt so so be it I guess.

I put 50 rounds through it just dialing in the scope. Shooting at 50 yards the norinco ball ammo didnt do so well grouping on average at 3/4 of an inch, I did have one 1/4 inch 3 shot group though. Of course they was some shooter error as I'm still new to this rifle and scope setup. And I learned that my breathing requires some extra attention and practice!

Ill be sure to post more on this as things progress.
