Okay so I want a new trigger for my 700 VLS. I wanted a jewell, but they do not come with a blued shoe and that is a must. I am not overly impressed by the Timneys.
Should a guy go with a shilen or a rifle basix?

Because it it a beautiful rifle, and a stainless trigger would look like s**t I think. Although I have a TC R55 benchmark that is fairly close in looks to a VLS and it has a stainless trigger so maybe it wouldn't look bad. I'll have to do some thinking on that one.
It is what I would consider my "hunting" rifle as well, so the trigger doesn't need to be as good as some of my other rifles.

I am considering a Jewell for two other right now though, would you say they are more intricate, harder to adjust, and more susceptible to damage (pierced primers) than some of the other designs? I also wish the jewells had a bit wider shoe

I don't understand why you would not simply have the factory trigger worked to a crisp, safe, 2.5 pounds and use it. That usually costs $50 as opposed to spending hundreds on a replacement.

You have done all my Rem triggers up to this point Dennis, and they are very good. Very very good. However I now want to go lower in weight than the factory triggers will allow.

Buy the jewell, and add a tyler trigger shoe in whatever color floats your boat. The ones for 870 rem triggers fit perfectly.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with a tuned remington trigger. Since I care how a gun performs and don't really care squat about what a trigger "looks" like, I guess I see your ultimate objective as cosmetic, not functional.

i have pierced a primer with my jewel and it killed it right there and then and i know of one other similar situation. by no means a fault of the trigger and not something i would base my buying decesion on, but it is an answer to your question. i have heard that the jewel is a little more suceptable to failure due to contamination within, dirt and such, but i have not experienced that. i do shoot off the ground without a mat frequently, but my jewel equiped rifles are not my hunting rifles. for those a timney is more than adequate.

If you are hell bent on either a Shilen or Rifle basix I would choose the Shilien. I have one of each, I like the Shilen most. It tuned up easier and others that have used the Rifle Basix longer than I have complain that the springs wear out or some BS and they start to creep and then you have to up the pull weight to compensate. I don't know if the spring thing is true but I was never able to get a light pull on my Rifle Basix without creep.
