OK I imagine I got your attention with that!!
I came home today and my wife met me at the door with a fairly large package.... inside was my BNIB M1A loaded with synthetic stock. Have been lusting after one of these ever since working on one for a buddy of mine. I have been having so much fun with my Norinco that I coudn't resist having something to compare it to.
Found one on the EE for a great price so figured what the hell, need to lose weight anyway so can afford it if I don't eat much for the next 3 months:)
First thing my wife asked before handing over the package was how long will it take you to take it apart, (after 30 years of marriage she has me pegged pretty well),
I have worked on a few Norincos and an M1A so was pretty confident that 15 minutes would be sufficient.
A few observations on this rifle:
1. Length of pull feels really nice
2. Trigger pull seems about the same as my Norinco after changing the factory hammer spring in the Norinco for a USGI spring
3. Gas assembly will need to be shimmed as the gas system locks up at about 9 oclock position so is very loose when tightened to the point that the gas plug is able to be inserted
5. Until I reassemble the rifle I will not know how it works regarding the tilt test etc.
6. Fit and finish is definately nice
7. Will post results this weekend.

Ya got me too LOL

Nice rifle, you can see the difference in quality.
Personally Im a function over form sort of guy ( OK...cheap bastard ) and could never justify the price.
Looking forward to a range report, and hoping it shoots as good as it looks.
Nice score..congrats and enjoy.

Too funny...LOL. It's hard to keep a new rifle in one piece in some folks' hands.

Looking forward to seeing how it shoots and don't mind the grumps Rodney.

Looks mighty fine to me. When I was in the Corps my buddy was an armorer for the Marine Corps rifle and Sniper Teams at 29 Palms Calif. Never seen a nicer looken M14, includen the ones my buddy built at the stumps. Hope she shoots as good as she looks. drool, drool, drool.

Hi Paul.
Will be loading the 3031 for the Norinco and a generic load for the springfield for this weekend. Basically I just have twice as many reasons to shoot now!!

I have a folder of bookmarks called "Things I Want to Buy" - Not a popular place with the missus, but it contains a link to a similar rifle.

I gather from the pics that the flash hider doesn't require banging to remove. Still, if I hope to buy one of these one day I really don't expect to be shimming it. Or should I adjust my expectations?

Very nice! And topical too! I just got my standard M1a in walnut arrive today too! Very nice fit and finish compared to my Norc. I will probably still keep both though. The norc might get banged up more in the bush - not sure yet :D

Hi Winston1984,
Unless the rifle is a "custom" one I expect most will need to be shimmed, manufacturing tolerances would dictate that these tolerances would mean that all parts are not exactly the same. I have no problem with this as I can't resist playing with my guns after I get them. I could, and probably will eventually sand the face of the gas system lock to the point where it is tight without the need for shims which eventually need replacing.

Nice rifle Rod. While you've likley got this all covered, I've been finding 40.5 4895 pushing a 168 pill to be a good load to work from.

Oh, btw ignore the miserable comments - some folks are just jealous.

Cheers,

Bob
