Yesterday I got it in my head that I needed a 9mm. Money permitted so I checked P&D's inventory online and made my way down to go fondle some pistols. I went down there with the idea that I'd probably get a USP but wanted to handle a glock, and an XD as well to compare them. After some questions were answered and triggers were squeezed I decided that, in fact, I would get the USP. The grip fit me better, it had the best trigger out of the three, I preferred the sights and it's a DA/SA system which I've become fond of through the last year with my 226.

So I paid for it and Diane asked when I wanted to pick it up. I asked her "how soon can I pick it up?", she told me because I live out in the country that perhaps they could put it through while I was there, she wasn't sure, but she'd try. Sure enough, I came back in an hour and I was good to go. Picked up the pistol, a new pistol case, some 9mm brushes, 500 rounds of 9mm 124g WWB and drove 'er home.

After dinner, I cleaned all the packing gunk out of it. Disassembly isn't quite as easy as the sig. I seemed to need something to push that little plug from the right side to get the slide release out (any tips, USP owners?). Not a huge deal, though. Lubed it, tossed it in the trunk and drove to pheonix range.

I don't have a ton of experience with many different types of pistols so most of this will be me comparing my new USP 9mm to my 226R .40. First off I have to say that I can shoot this pistol very well. Right off the bat with no experience shooting one of these I managed to place 20 shots in a 3" group off hand at 10 yards. That's pretty good for me. The more I shot, the tighter it got. The factory 3 dot sights are great and I find them really easy to aquire.

The size of the grip is nice. It fits my hand well. It feels a little thinner and longer than my sig, however not as comfortable. My biggest problem with the pistol is the aggressive checkering (spikes!) on the front/backstrap. There's no changing them so I'll get used to it, I guess.

As I said before, it was my favorite trigger out of the three, but still not as good as my sig. SA is pretty good, albeit a little mushy. It doesn't seem to break as cleanly as the 226. The DA doesn't even compare to my sig as far as I'm concerned. It's really long and seems to get very stiff towards the end of the pull. Perhaps this will get better with use.

As expected, there were no hiccups in the operation of this pistol. I was only shooting the one type of ammo, but it gobbled them and shot 'em straight. Germans be praised.

Overall, I'm very content with my purchase. I know it sounds like I should've bought another sig, but I wanted to try something different and it shoots really well.

Check it out.

after trial and error (not any error really), I think that the 124 is working out better for me with the USP. Install a match trigger kit and the DA/SA will get better with the USP with dryfire and use.

rack the slide so it is in SA, this will make it easier.

Make sure you lubricate the hammer strut especially where it contacts the hammer, hammer spring, and also the trigger bar where is connects with the hammer.

Hope this helps

How far is the reach to the trigger in DA mode on your USP compared to your P226? Also in SA mode?
How do you feel about the lever mag release compared to the "American" button release?

I push it in with my thumb as far as I can and then use a Q-tip or toothpick to force it out completely.

Nice gun by the way – exactly like mine, except for the new-style HK logo.

I think most people get used to it and find it faster than button releases in general. Using the index trigger finger to work the mag release is a lot faster I think than trying to reach the semi hidden(by the grip piece) button on the Sig. Maybe my thumb isn't long enough....

If I am in slide lock, I use my weak hand as I insert the mag and then just before I acquire my grip again, I use my thumb to press the slide release.

I think I'm having a senior dyslexic moment here.....that sounds backwards to me.
Run that by me again?
Ah...did you mean "slide release" rather than "mag release"?

Yeah.. dont worry bout the DA...give it a few thousand rounds and it will be like a different gun...much smoother. USP has a long break in time...

If this is who I think it is, I'll vouch for this being a damn fine gun - I think we were at Phoenix at the same time... I was the Beretta 96 DAO shooting at the far right end, and if I recall you had a friend of yours join you to shoot your .22/45 for his first time and then stepped him up to the SIG in .40 Smith?

Sound familiar? :D If so, then you fellas can SHOOT! And that HK is a beautiful piece of work. Just CRISP.

USP's just look ###y. Mags look expensive.

Do the HK usp's have a Hi Power style grip angle?

USP mags are not expensive. They used to be more, like $60 a piece. I have purchased them in the USA for around $8 US.
I think they are going for $15 -$17 US for 10rd mags.
