So I just upgraded from a 4x32 to a 3-9x40 Nikon Prostaff Nikoplex.

Since this is my first variable scope, I'm not sure if what I'm seeing is expected or not. All magnification powers are perfectly clear, until I get to 8. At that point, even the slightest movement of my eye causes the scope shadow (or whatever it's called) to appear. It's very finicky. Is this something normal given the magnification?

Thanks in advance.

Couple of things to check, have you adjusted the scope to the proper eye relief? Your eye should sit about four inches away from the back of the scope. From there make sure you've played with the focus knob to get a sharp image. Also and I'm assuming since you are at nine power you are looking further than 100yds away. If not the parallax of the shorter distance at that high of a magnification can sometimes cause blur.

Hope that helps you out!
