New Walther CCP .... gas delayed!

A new 9mm Walther pistol is to be released at the IWA European firearms expo. Its call the CCP, standing for "Concealed Carry Pistol". Its a single stack 8 round capacity. The most interesting part is the fixed barrel gas delayed blowback system reminiscent of the HK P7. It has a pre-cocked striker that gives you constant a 2.5kg trigger with short 7mm travel. This results in a low bore axis, softer recoil and greater accuracy. Standard version has a 90mm barrel but hopefully there will be a threaded barrel version that will be Canada legal. The barrel has polygonal rifling which is a first for Walther.

Maybe this pistol and the Remington R51 will motivate HK to release the HK3 380 pistol they have had in development for a number of years and perhaps even a modern P7 successor eventually.

I doubt that a "canadian restricted" version with extended or threaded bbl will ever be available up here. The CCP was designed to fill one purpose only, conceal carry. It needs to be as compact as possible and Walther delivered the goods with that particular model. Plus Walther already have other models with extended barrels that are legal in the country. I sure can dream about it (sure would like one in stock form w/o anything sticking out up front!). Our fellows Americans will be delighted when this baby hits the shore.
 
Okay, I know this is nit picking, but I can't get past their chintzy banner logo. It looks like it belongs on a toy. Otherwise, their pistols are top notch, at least the ones I've handled.
 
Is that a manual safety?

And no while I am a HK fanboy screw the HK3, they need to bring out a shield rival, not a mouse gun.

Will these CCP a good alternative of HKP7M8? I still like HK better.

nice. based on the specs that seems like it is going to be a very effective purpose build pistol. hope it works as well as it sounds like it should. looking forward to seeing the innards. too bad it is a prohib.

ya i don't know. i'm finding most single stack fit better in the hand and frankly i resent a mag that is half full of air.

I like fat hand grips. Love my Girsan with Beretta wooden grips, extra fat.

I resent the law, but I just think of New York and DC, then think I live in paradise. 10 is WAY better than 7 or less...
 
nice pretty gun. It will definitely push the competition to come up with newer/better ideas.
I am looking forward for whatever HK comes up with, specially in the striker fired world!
 
Here is the gas delayed blowback system, pretty much the same arrangement as the HK P7 with a gas piston under the barrel. Unfortunately the pistol will be made at the Umarex Arnsberg plant and not at Walthers Ulm facility.

Wow, they really did lift that gas-delayed system DIRECTLY from the P7. The Steyr GB uses the same CONCEPT, but this is a direct copy of the P7 layout, not the concept. Its a P7 minus the squeeze cocker. Oh well... why reinvent the wheel I suppose.

Something that looks like a P30, but with a fixed barrel and a gas delayed system is probably inevitable at this point. In the movie industry they say “All revenue streams eventually reach the ocean.” The same is probably true here.
 
The Steyr GB system is essentially a miniature VG 1-5 they are so alike. P7 uses the same Barnitzke concept but the design for the gas system was copied from the Swiss M47 prototype pistol that competed and lost to the SIG Petter 47/8 pistol that later became the Sig P210. Also there are a few other pistols that use the same piston arrangement like the Vektor CP1 and the Chinese Model 77 pistol series (M77B, NP20 etc). The gas delayed blowback system is a good way to build a compact pistol as it need less room then a browning tilting barrel pistol. Also its avoids the reliability problems short browning tilt barrel pistols can experience. It also uses the gas to reduce the reward momentum of the slide and that reduces recoil. The downside is the pistol will warm up quicker if you empty the mag quickly but that is more of a training issue and less important in a carry pistol. I was looking forward to this pistol but then found our it will be made at the old Umarex plant in Arnsberg where in the past quality was somewhat lower then the Walther Ulm factory. Umarex/Walther did spend a small fortune upgrading both facilities recently so maybe quality will not be an issue.
 
I love how they call it Innovative Softcoil Gas Technology, like they invented something new. It was innovative... in the 1970s.

And what Karl Barnitzke was doing in 1945 with the Gustloff Volkssturmgewehr was REALLY innovative.

If they are going to copy something, the P7 is not a bad place to start. I can say, from owning and using the GB, PSP, M8, M13 and M10, the Steyr design cannot hold a candle to the P7, although it is a cool historical oddity in its own right. One of the things I do not like about the GB is that it fouls the entire front part of the gun under the slide, caking the barrel with burnt powder reside. It also heats up faster and more than the P7 - particularly the slide. With the P7, the fouling is largely confined to the piston and the piston channel - as is the heating, although the heat spreads through the gun if you keep firing more and more rounds. The other thing with the GB, it is actually BIGGER than a Beretta 92. Its a large gun. I prefer the scale of the P7s certainly.

With this Walther, if we can get them, I would definitely buy one. They didnt get the bore axis down to P7 levels, but other than that it looks like a really nice little gun. Too little for our glorious and free nanny state, but maybe something can be worked out eventually.

A German company has bought the rights to the Steyr GB and will be producing it. The new pistol is called P18, a reference to the original Steyr-Diamler-Puch Pi18 pistols that were prototypes and precursors to the Steyr GB. The new pistols will have a sheet metal frame instead of aluminium supposedly to help combat heat. Some of the other changes are a switch from slide mounted decocker to frame mounted saftey and a German style push down ambi paddle mag release. There will also be a compact version with shorter barrel dubbed the P18k (kruz) pictured below.

So it is SSD. I was just going to say... it would be cool if they looked at making a compact version, but as you are saying, their site shows both 140mm barrel version and a 120mm. 120 isn't exactly compact, but at least these are Canada friendly. I wonder what the price point will be on these. It is going to have to be fairly modest I would think, if they plan on making more than a handful of them.

A Canadian legal version of the CCP would probably require a re-design of the gas system?

Increased barrel length would increase gas dwell time meaning more pressure,heat, faster unlocking...would probably need a heavier recoil spring as well.
