For all you 6.5 freaks out there, weatherby just came out with a new cartridge! The 6.5-300 wby mag! I think I'm gunna have to invest in one :D

I get that, but now it's commercialized for guys like me who can't afford to buy custom dies, brass etc. hopefully they'll offer it in a vanguard at some point.
 
Finally Weatherby jumped on the 6.5 bandwagon.........and about time too, this wildcat has been around since the 70s and maybe even earlier. I'm surprised they went full length instead of their 2.54 case but I suspect they saw what Nosler did and want to compete directly in the upper velocity realm. This should be a popular cartridge, with several sources of brass that ain't 4 bucks a pop, like the Nosler. It may even kill the Nosler if they don't do something about their cost of brass. Yes it will require a long action but who cares, both the Mark V and the Vanguard are already available in the 300 Wby and 375 H&H so no changes needed there, likewise the 700 Rem and Win 70 are also already long enough.............could be a winner.

You can't afford to buy 300wby brass and neck it down with dies that are currently available, but you can afford to spend $6 or $7 per shot for factory loads?

I meant I can't really afford to buy the custom dies, reamer etc. but now that's it's commercially available all that stuff will be a bit cheaper. Yes I know you can buy 300 wby brass and run it through your sizer to make the 6.5 but id rather buy the actual brass. This gun isn't a "let's go shoot all day" caliber. For handloaders this caliber opens a whole new can of worms.
 
Looks like fun. Don't need it in the slightest, but when has that ever stopped me? The only issue is, I own more than enough Weatherby rifles. A Cooper, perhaps? :D

The article suggests Roy played with the cartridge back in the 50s... nothing new at all here. But new that they've made it for mass consumption.
 
Geez, you got to hand it to Weatherby, they are the king of speed. Good ole Roy was sure ahead of his time. Well, I'm going to start saving.....again!
 
The 6.5 has been a hole in the Wby line up since the late 50s, I wondered why they never filled it. Likely because of the bad press that the 264 WM got as a barrel burner back when it came out.........
 
Introducing a belted cartridge in this day and age seems so quaint. :)

What was the last belted cartridge introduced? What was the last one that actually NEEDED a belt? 450 Marlin?

Also with the powders back then... it likely wasnt too far off from the .257 bee. As I recall they used the shorter cartridge for the .257 because the larger one wouldnt have given any advantage since powders didnt burn slow enough. Who knows, but its here now!

While the 264 WM is a barrel burner, the nosler and now this weatherby are way beyond that. There is a trade off for pushing this much powder and projectiles at probably north of 3500/sec.

Here today, gone tomorrow barrel life. I would think 800-1000 rounds.

I wonder what the twist is in these? Dont think they would stabilize anything over 140 gr in a typical twist, would have to be 1=9 or better.
