Does anybody here own one of these new rifles? How do you find the safety / rebounding hammer? Does it function well? I'm considering picking one of these up but I'm still a little bit on the fence.

I lucked out and found a Browning. I did read an article in Shooting Times about a kit to replace it. I think Brownells sells them.

I have one and I like it a lot.Though I d prefer without the safeties they are not that bad and tjhe tang safety can be actually very useful especially when unloading the gun.It is also made small and unobtrusive. The gun is high quality with a deep blue and nice walnut after all it is made by the same company that made the browning copy. The extra light also handles nicely in the woods and is an excellent carry rifle .Also it comes with the shotgun butt which is mor shooter friendly than the crescent buttplate. And if you don t like the tang safety you can always remove it and cover it up with a tang sight.

86s can be easily unloaded out thru the loading gate.

Getting on with a tang saftey.....what would be the other option

I agree with above, tang sight & who'd know.

I looked at the rebounding hammer on a friends new 1886 ELW. It seems to me the only real differece is you can't lower it all the way, like on a half #### type. Are people finding there is some functional disadvantage to this? Seems to be a reasonable break from tradition with no downside, excepting the sentimental value of tradition. I think the tang safety will be a handy feature. It still gives you the option of carrying the rifle with the hammer on half #### and additionally you can have it in full #### with the tang safety on. When calling in an elk it would be nice to be able to have it cocked and loaded with the tang safety still on. A quick flick of the thumb on the tang and you are ready to fire. It all should add up to a nice working rifle, one I can carry in the mud the blood and the beer when I don't want to hurt my darling original Model 71. I think if the original 1886 had been made in this configuration it would have been an improvement. Just be thankfull it didn't come out with a cross bolt safety, laminate stock, raised cheek piece, giant novelty lever loop and drilled and tapped for scope mounts.

Well guys, today I caved in and bought the new 1886 Short Rifle in 4570. I will be laying eyes on it next Tuesday. I can hardly wait. Thanks for your positive feedback.

Well I decided last week that I wasn't going to wait forever for a Browning 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine so I bought a new Winchester 1886 Short Rifle. I picked it up today and wouldn't you know it, a Browning 1886 Saddle Ring Carbine finally pops up on the EE, today! I ended up buying both.

We just did a quick shoot of my buddies 1886 ELW last night. Fired four shot strings from the kneeling position at 50 yards. No problem putting the shots into three to four inches or so. Recoil is really no worse than my Marlin 1895 M in 450 Marlin. Shoots and cycles quite nicely. You wont regret your purchse.
