New Winchester Model 71

Love the Model 71, but not if it has a tang safety. Just kills it for me.
My model 71 is one of the favorites of my collection, and gets carried on the moose hunt each fall. It is by far the most accurate of my levers as well. I can consistently group my shots in a circle the size of a loonie whether at 50 yards or 100. Mind you that is with the bolt peep sight, but it is a very accurate gun. Never tried reloading with it as I have oodles of old factory ammo to play with. Here are a few pics. Forgive the quality as I did not have any nice ones on hand, and had to snap a few of them indoors this evening.

Now if I could just find a short rifle (carbine)!

Yup, that's what I'm talking about, no new ones. That sure is a sweet looking rifle Matt!

The Mdl 71 is one of the few Lever guns that has real appeal to me. I probably won't buy one because I don't really need one, but they are really nice.

One of my friends owns an original and he hunts with it almost exclusively. It's a wonderful rifle.

It will be nice to see some new ones out there. Hopefully more people will take them out hunting. Most of the guys that own the Mdl 71's rarely hunt with them these days and mostly just pose them in staged photographs.

Here's the new one. I had a look at it at the SHOT show.

Quality/fit finish appears to be excellent. My picture unfortunately sucks. Bad angle makes the proportions look screwy.

Looks good to me but then I kinda' partial to them as you've probably guessed:). I was wondering, is it a replica or reproduction of what they used to put out as a standard grade or was it a deluxe grade with checkering etc?

Been trying to convince myself not to buy one of these for years...........these threads don't help:(

Dam sure some nice ones out there though

I think you should get one if you are going to hunt with it.....w:h:

If you are just going to shoot it at the range and do like the rest:

pose it with staged photos, then no reason to bother.;)

Me? I'd be all over it if I thought i would hunt with it, but I won't so I won't buy one just yet...

The DLX grade gave you hand cut checkering, metal pistol grip cap and super grade sling swivels. By far the most desireable 71 was the DLX Carbine, early production long tang with the 98a bolt peep factory installed. There is also a subtle difference to the hammer on early 71's, a cross hatch pattern as opposed to the serrations on the later original 71's hammers. I wonder how fit/finish will be on the reruns and if they will still have the heft of their ancestors ?? When you have a 71 in your hands you know you have ahold of a REAL gun.

That's the pattern on mine. With the condition it was in, I couldn't turn it down and as I mentioned previously, this one's a keeper.

Thanks sealhunter. I'd prefer they were produced by the original manufacturer but a close second to that option, reguardless of who is producing them, it's nice to see them coming out on the scene again.

:)X2. I'm not a collector. If it doesn't get used, it's history. I did try collecting at one point in time, with Colt New Service revolvers. I got to four and decided, :rolleyes:collecting for the sake of 'having' wasn't my bag. So much for my interest in the New Service revolvers.

Standard grade is pictured. It does have a tang safety. Something I consider to be unnecessary pandering to the antis. But something I'd tolerate happily if I had the dough. These are very nice.

The media info I have indicates it's available only in standard grade as a SHOT show special at the moment.
