Touching down in Auckland on January 17th. Staying until May sometime, as I'll be in the NWT for guiding in June. Was going to take a gun but I'll be flying through Thailand first so that's out. Guess I'll just have to buy one there. Looking forward to hunting and fishing for 5 months. The 6 weight is looking forward to those big browns!

Yea would like to catch up, now back in at Home in New Plymouth, and flying back to Canada on the 3rd, Not very good weather this trip back, this trips Thar hunt abandoned due to flooding, and last weeks southern storm. Oh well I'm back for six weeks in mid March, Been getting a fair bit of trout fishing in, between the howling gales and rain.
Enjoy southland, I've never spent any time down there, other than the odd trip down to gore, from Queenstown fly fishing, I got a few items on my bucket list, Movore lakes fishing and hunting,, diving Fiordland, Hunting/fishing round Te Anau lake, next trip south I may bring down the boat.
For the original poster, I recommend you bring what sports gear you can, most with the exception of salt water fishing gear is 30% more expensive than you are used to.
pick up the spot X books for the activities your interested in , hunting, freshwater fishing, surf casting (salt fishing from shore) etc these provide valuable access, hut, contacts, and species aviable, at that spot, good tool to plan trips with.

Visited Rotorua in North Island and even delivered an M14 session there for a day.....fellows took me to three gun shops. All rifles had cans on them. Required by law to hunt with a can....now that’s gun control!
Loved every minute in the North and South Islands of NZ.

$160 eh?! Unbelievable. Looking forward to the south more so as well. But it will all be good I'm sure.
I was window shopping guns and ammo last night and was stunned at the prices. Savage axis 30-06 with scope, $270 off, STILL COST $900 NZD!! Was planning on a Lee Enfield anyway but still most sporters are in the $400 range. Damn... the books are a good tip, thanks! I'll track some down.

apparently NR can get a 1 day ticket.......... so would have to weigh up the Cost an amount of Fishin one will do..... thats proberly what im guna look into for a handful of fishen sessions...
mates tell me the Ocean is free to fish!
an nah, its quite expensive for a fishen license. AU is $25 a year in one state and about $35 a year over the other side of the River LOL

We're hoping to live mostly on fish and other things we've foraged, as we're both interested in that kind of life, so in that sense I may get my moneys worth out of a $160 license!! I also heard the ocean is free, will confirm on arrival. Taking a few baitcast outfits for that as well.

thats the downside! things are a little more expensive in general, fuels high $2.12 at present, down from $2,50 or so recently..... an the rate for work is fairly sh!tty, im a few bucks up from minimum wage and im driving a truck for a civil company at the moment---- not stoked on it but hey its goin to pay my way to do some hunts and bag a few tahr and hopefully a very sought after Red Stag in near future...... possibly

That’s just it, after mining down under collapsed prices dropped. But if people are willing to look at as a working vacation, and not your retirement job; it’s viable. Or as working to delay your retirement, draw pension in Canada whole down there, etc.
It’s also a way to pick up “international experience” in your trade instead of volunteering with Oxfam or something. Done with the right planning and expectations, the lower wages are nicely offset in other ways.
