New Zealand bound January 2019!

That is Full on!

i rekon you blokes would be on better money per hour though on average, making it somewhat more worth your while?

I'm a truck driver, tried for years to get in to Aus to pull road trains which I already do here, due to better wages. Australians I've met here who are working agree that everything pays significantly more in Aus than it does in Can... way she goes.

im a truck driver aswell but only the Rigid tippers :D over here im driving for a civil earthmoving joint and am in a little UD bogie axel but am wishing i had the HC heavy combo atleast or what a kiwi calls Class 4- as there is more oppertunities with the bigger mobs for milk and logs and freight etc.

yeah them road trains are full on in the middle of aus typically, a few fellas i know do it, younger than me and they just love the trucks in general though haha born into it almost!

interesting though, ill keep that in the back of my mind!

Touching down in Auckland on January 17th. Staying until May sometime, as I'll be in the NWT for guiding in June. Was going to take a gun but I'll be flying through Thailand first so that's out. Guess I'll just have to buy one there. Looking forward to hunting and fishing for 5 months. The 6 weight is looking forward to those big browns!

IMHO New Zealand is the best place in the world for hunting based on the accessibility and variety of game; especially for a Canadian travelling on a working holiday visa.

In 2011, getting a firearm required you to bring your Canadian license into the NZ Police, they would call the CFP to verify it, issue you an equivalency certificate and you could show that to any dealer in order to buy a firearm, which they would usually verify with the NZP. Firearms were more expensive than in Canada (even after taking the exchange into account) but I never had any issues selling them for what I paid so don't shy away from dropping a significant amount of money on a rifle. Seems to me that the Tikka T3 in 7mm-08 was the holy grail of rifles according to most of my buddies but I had an ole beater Savage 110 in 308 with a rough looking Simmons "8 Point" scope, which I think I still paid $400 NZD for! I had a Bushnell 3200 with rings mailed from Canada since it would have been nearly double the price to buy it in NZ. I wouldn't suggest trying to bring an optic with you but when I do eventually go back I will be, that's for sure.

Good optics were key where I was usually hunting, in the lower Rimutaka Forest Park near Wellington. Never got a deer but sure did shoot a pile of goats!

South Island was by far my favourite; scenery was like nothing I had ever seen before, and the hunting was a lot of fun even if I wasn't very successful. I can't help but think how much I'd rather be hunting in NZ every time I'm sitting in my little deer blind, its totally different country and a whole different style of hunting there that I'm really much more keen on.

Sweet Post mate- i know the spot your pictured with the creek mouth opening up to the Ocean! i was going to go for a look inthere myself but i didnt end up stayin in wellington for long an certainly had no rifle etc!

SeamusMac, cool pics! I got an email this morning from the NZ police, they're leery of me planning to live in a van as they say you can't store firearms in an unattended vehicle. I fired a response back to them so we will see what they say. May need to provide an address to calm them down. Either way I'm looking forward to being there!!

Not of a dilemma that one
1 Leave firearm in locked vehicle
2 walk along main start of town and sit in cafe with a firearm in soft case !!
I know the law and in the case of 2 a police officer will be there pretty quickly telling you to put it back in the van!

@kyle700 haven't forgotten about the images just pre Christmas crazy here

Went up there a few times and always came out with at least one goat. Beautiful country there! Best experience was in the Mystery Block up near Whanganui, heaps of pig sign and I think we came out with 6 goats that day; one of them with a real nice set of horns. At that point I thought I'd be coming back to NZ in short order to I fleshed the skull and buried it in the sand near Red Rocks in Owhiro Bay hoping that the little critters would clean it off for me... I wonder if its still back there buried in the sand haha.

As for leaving a rifle in the car... I didn't do any prolonged freedom camping so I just used the address for whatever campground I was based out of as my address for the NZP. I knew at least one fella who just used the address of his first hostel for the paperwork and then just went about wandering the South Island for a couple months with no fixed address. He would always lock the rifle through the action, keep it buried in the trunk and kept the bolt on his person if he was going to leave his vehicle for an extended period of time. Ammo was always locked in the glove box.

If you're going to be in Central Otago and want to have a go at some rabbits there was a property in Bannockburn that used to turn out at least a couple rabbits an hour for me, even after hunting it a couple times a week for nearly 3 months. I'm not sure if its under different ownership now or not but I can give you the address and there was always a farm sign at the bottom of the driveway with the owner's phone # on it. He had zero issues with me shooting rabbits off the property as long as I was careful around his alpacas - be wary of the one-eyed herd leader! He doesn't take very kindly to people...

Good to know. I thought of doing the latter, glad to hear you can get away with it.

Rabbits would be cool!!
