Newb - 300 - 600 yrd rifle

Thanks all for the responses, a few things suggested that I will read about more. Ideally don't want to go all $$$ in as it's more try and see if I have any long-term interest to hit paper so just something reasonable to start out and upgrade/sell later. I have seen a few different caliber suggestions posted, I only ever looked at 223 and 308 being the most common. Never looked at 6.5, 243, 22-250 and 270 win and know very little about them (yet).

thanks all.

You may want to consider barrel life as well. .308 and .223 barrels have excellent longevity.
Some of the high speed 6 & 6.5 calibers may give you a bit of a ballistics advantage, but at the expense of barrel life.
It could also be argued that all that does is hide poor wind reading on the part of the shooter.

Another consideration is if competitions are your thing (and they will most certainly make you a better shooter), some calibers may place you in certain classes.

Can't go wrong with 308 to 600yd. Best selection and price in every aspect.

6.5/260 has better ballistics but ammo/components are more expensive with shorter barrel life.

223 can't really be compared to 308. Like comparing 22LR to 45ACP.
