I am in the process of getting my R-PAL (cfc says it's in the mail:rockOn:), so now I need to figure out what to get as my first pistol. At this point I have no plans to join any particular shooting discipline, just plink. I am looking at .22's due to cheap ammo. I have looked at a few buckmarks and a couple ruger mark III's, are these good choices or should I look at something else??? Btw, my budget is $500 or less. Thanks in advance.

Can't go wrong with the Ruger. My first handgun was a Mark II and after 16 plus years it still accurate, reliable and lots of fun.

Get a Sig Mosquito. At least they look like a real handgun, not some dinky play toy. Plus, I think they are right at $500.

Love my Ruger 22/45 Mklll. Accurate and reliable.
I was in WSS the other day and handled a Buckmark with some ###y wood grips.........MMMMmmmmmmmmm......tempting :D

(E)

I'm also thinking of getting the Ruger. I always wanted a Luger, so it looks as close as I can get, I think. Is there anything different between mk I,II,III? I assume there must be, but what are the benefits?

One problem I have had with the search is you can't use less than 3 letters, making you wade through a lot of posts to find specifics.

IIRC, the mark I dosen't have a last-shot hold open for the bolt. This was added for the Mark II. Not sure what features the Mark III sports, but I do know the models have both tapered barrels and heavy bull barrels available. I'd opt for the latter if nothing else but for balance and accuracy.

I love my Walther P22. Some people will tell you they're junk and have a high propensity for failure, but those were the original P22s. All of the issues with the older ones have been resolved if you're buying one that's been made in the last couple of years.
