Hello, I live in Ottawa and just inherited a bush lot in WMU 28 near Kirkland Lake. I am determined to hunt a moose on this property, hopefully next year. I can't seem to resolve my chances of actually getting a tag. I don't care if it is a cow, calf or bull. But I suppose my preference would be a bull. I am going to enter the draw as a single hunter. I only want WMU 28. Is this going to happen or is it going to take me a few years to get lucky and score a tag? Should I buy a bear license too as a back-up plan? I seem to remember there being lots of black bears in the general area, though I haven't been North in about 8 years.

First year in the moose draw (pool 2)your chances of drawing an adult tag are ZERO.

When you buy your moose licence you get a calf tag, you need to apply for adult tags.

Looking in the regs, I would think you will have one before I will.
More available tags in 28 than 56. (258 vs. 79)
I think your first year, you are in pool 2, next year you would be in
pool 1, better odds then. You have to start somewhere!
Good luck...

if your looking to get a better chance to get a tag, would you consider inviting other hunters?? dad and i are looking to go moose hunting but we are in the same situation as you....if it catches your interest, let me know...we are mature hunters and just looking to have a good hunt! thanks.

Phil

Ok, so a calf tag is guaranteed? I'm lost with the regs, I am educated but I think you need a Phd to figure out how the draw works. I'll feel a whole lot better if I'm up there with a bear license and calf tag as a minimum.

When you buy your license, you get a calf tag (valid in MOST WMU's, but not all). You then enter into the adult draw. 78% of tags go to groups, 17% to individuals and 5% to northern residents.

The first year you enter the draw, you will be in pool 2 and won't get an adult tag. You must enter every year thereafter to remain in pool 1 and be eligible for an adult tag. You are far better off applying as a group, if you can find even 1 friend/relative to apply with you.

I wouldn't be surprised if you don't draw a tag as an individual for the next 15 years.

Also, they are looking at changing the draw system, so all of this may be re-written...

Yes Phil, I would consider putting a group together. Not for the upcoming year though. Reason: I haven't been to the property yet, only reviewed 30 year old aerial photos. There are no buildings and I don't have a camp set up there, so I wouldn't want anyone to depend on me in case the site is a bust. I plan on scouting May 24 week-end to see what the land looks like. Will share my findings here for sure *because I'm going to need lots of advice too!

I got a cow tag for WMU 5 in my first year applying as an individual. We had a group of 5 that applied for a bull, got it and then 3 individual draw entries of which 2 of us got cow tags.

Northern WMU's are easy to get tags for. I know guys in pool 2 that have drawn individual tags for the north-west...Problem is most guys don't want to drive 20 or more hours to get them...

If you look at the 2008 numbers, there were 1366 hunters applying for 455 bull tags in WMU 5.

But in WMU 28 there were 2848 hunters applying for 174 bull tags...

I hunt WMU 28. Moose are around for sure, and I would apply if I were you.
We went for bear this year and did not time the hunt to be in the moose season...but saw them, so check the regs and stats for the unit as suggested above....and apply!

As kind of stated before, you will have zero possibility of getting an adult tag in pool 2 as an individual or group. However, get in the draw this year so you get out of pool 2 and into pool 1. Also, get as many buddies as you can to apply for 28 as a group, and if you know people with hunting licenses but wont hunt moose, pay for their tag and your odds of getting an adult go up.

With the new/pending moose regs, they are just thinking of making it harder for people to get into pool 1. All of the info for it can be found on the OMNR website. And like said, it is pending.

For the bear, there are no "pools". Just go to a Service Ontario and buy a tag. Hunting them is allot different than a moose though. Plan on using baiting as your main hunting technique. So with that, plan on going for either a long trip, or many trips during the summer or fall. Also I think there are deer in Kirkland Lake, could be wrong. But, there are grouse.

and if you know people with hunting licenses but wont hunt moose, pay for their tag and your odds of getting an adult go up.

This is the problem with the current system, and hopefully will be resolved. Too many non-hunters taking the tags away from guys that want to hunt.

How big is this bush lot you speak of?

166 acres of swamp, brush and black spruce. There is a creek that runs through it and based on my 30 year old aerial photos, two trails that look like moose runs. There are no buildings on the property and it is bounded by crown on three sides. No road access and I've scaled about 800m from the concession road to property line.

As for the deer question, maybe. My cottage was about 30 minutes away from this property (I sold the cottage about 8 years ago) and my great grandfather had a deer rack hanging on the wall. I always assumed that he took it at the cottage (probably 75 years ago or something) but I only ever saw rabbits, bears and the odd moose in the area - though I didn't hunt as a youngster.

/\ thank-you. I am Ok with a calf tag - I hear they are good eating. I want to set this property up for an annual hunt. If I take 15 calfs and get a bull trophy once in my life, that will be fine.

My goal is to use the property, enjoy the outdoors, shoot my gun and spend some time in Northern Ontario again.

Check the ontario regulations- you can get them on line form MNR ontario ( there's a moose section you can download separately ( see below) It shows you the number of tags ansd applicants in each WMU.

For area 28, the odds for a getting an adult tag are not the best 14 to 1 for a bull last year( the minimum group size) . Apologies if you already know this , but moose hunting is not an individual activity - it's a lot of work to haul 7-800 pounds out of the bush.

One option you might consider for a bull or cow tag is if you can and want to use the property as your home address - since they have an extra tag alllocation for northern residents -( plus you get a few breaks, ie studded tires OK, no e tests for your plates).

But I would definitely apply for a tag- that way you get into pool 1 after you're not drawn, since you won't get a tag in area 28 the first time (you'll be in pool 2 the first time, pool 1 gets filled first), and you can always hunt calf.

I personally get bear tags whenever I hunt moose -ever since I saw a 600 pounder standing at easy range, and didn't have a tag

Any questions, feel free to shoot me a PM or maybe we can get together . Have a great Xmas and 2010.:)
