Newb needs help! Varmint Rifle Options??

I'm not sure if this thread is helping or hurting the OP... Too many options create confusion. If you (OP) are certain that your quarry is only coyote and down sized game, then a 1:9 or lower teist .223 is a great way to go... Good ballistics and inexpensive to shoot. If you "might" move up to deer sized game and still want only one rifle, then consider, .243, .260, 6.5x55, or similar... Any of these and others in their class will work fine... Guns I would recommend are the Rem 700, Savage 10/11/12, Tikka T3, or Weatherby Vanguard... They will all work fine. Just buy one and get shooting! Have fun.

This is some pretty sound advice as well. I bought a Vanguard S1 when they were on sale and put a Timney in it for another $120. It wears me down when walking around with it all day (snowshoeing through thick snow) but boy is it nice to shoot, groups a LOT tighter than my partner's T3 lite that's for sure. As per the caliber choice.223 is unbeatable if you're only going to be shooting bought ammunition for obvious reasons. If you're planning on reloading I believe there are better choices. .204s are flat, fast, cheap, and you can see your hits in your scope even with the lightest of guns. and something like .243 offers you heavier bullets which will buck the wind better for those long shots (or if you decide to take down a dear)...

...in the end, it's really preference, but I'm sure you've picked up on that by now. People are naturally going to vote for what they've experienced success with. Which in modern shooting tech is almost anything. As such, you'll be happy with almost everything you take the time to get used to and play around with. It's pretty obvious what I'm biased towards

Cheers guys! Thanks for all the replies. I was hoping to round up a bunch of options to research and sort through. Basically settled on .223 caliber but still checking out rifles, so many good choices!

Hey Mike7~I still like the model 10s best, but if you're hung-up on stainless, this might be a tasty option; http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/12bvss Only think I don't like about it is the internal magazine, I like detachable. That said...were I starting-out today on a .223 search, I'd probably nab a "Hog Hunter". Would probably shoot just as well as that 12 BVSS, and be almost 1/2 the cost.

Hoyt...always the voice of reason... :) Great point though. I think that if you try to find "one gun" to do everything, chances are...you'll be making some compromise at one end of the spectrum. .243 IS about the minimum for deer, but overkill for groundhogs and more than what's req. for coyotes. Other factors~the report of a .243 is significantly louder than .223 and if you're like most of us...you'll be varmint-hunting on someone else's property and often, near or around their own animals. The gun's report is a factor. Lastly, if you like to see the bullet's impact through the scope, forget .243. It's not punishing recoil at all, but enough of a push that you'll be looking at something else after you hit the go button. To me, a good deal of the fun of varmint hunting is seeing the impact or at least, seeing where the bullet went if you missed. :) Granted, not all that common with a .223 inside of 200 yards. :)

I'll definitely have more than one, the collection is getting big as it is but I was thinking if there is such a thing as an all around rifle I might as well try it as I'm not really in a position to buy two at the moment. But on the same token, main intrest is in varmints, great options here and I'll probably stick with a .223 and expand to bigger calibers for bigger game. Thanks for the advice.

I've seen some nice purpose built varmint rifles with the 26" heavy barrel's, big stocks etc. while researching but is there such a thing as a small light weight dedicated varmint rifle? Chances are I'll be huffing this thing for a few kilometers and don't really want it to weigh 12 pounds.

Surprisingly enough, my goto gopher rifle is my Remington SPS Varmint with the 26" barrel. I load it up with 40 gr or 50 gr VMax bullets and watch the fun. It has the 1:12 twist, so the 50 gr is good for 'yotes to about 200 yards. Alas, my goto for 'yotes is my Savage Predator Max1 in 243 exlcusively with the Nosler 70 grain Varmint pills. The smaller bullets are ok for the gophers, but for me it comes down to the powder in the casing. The 243 is nearly double the little 223.

When I am in a really good gopher field, I let the barrel cool on the 223 and blast them with my 17 HMR. Those little Vmax pills are really hyper sensitive to the wind though on the longer shots.
