Hi,

I am pretty new to this site, and getting into shooting. I want a rifle that works well, looks appealing.. and hopefully something that I can take out to my redneck set up firing range out in the bush. Is that even possible?

I love the looks of the SA80, I dunno why but I am very partial to the bullpup design. I have my PAL, but I dont have prohibited, or restricted on it. Is there any way possible to find and purchase one of these rifles without doing my restricted test? Not that that would stop me anyways. I just want a rifle I can use at home without travelling an hour to a certified range. I would kind of like 1 of each. I kind of have the same question for a long range rifle like the steyr ssg, or winchester 700.

Any suggestions??

Sounds like the Tavor is 'just the ticket'.

I thought the SA80 was non-restricted? The only catch was that there basicaly aren't any outside of the British military, so its classification is a moot point.

If you want a bull-pup, look into the Tavor or the FS2000.
 
To answer a couple of questions

I think we need to directly answer a couple of krippler's questions. Everyone is kinda answering them, but they need to be directly answered. First off. Yes there is a list of Restricted and Non-Restricted arms. First off, all handguns are restricted. I am finding as a general rule of thumb...if its an assult rifle or could be classified as one...its restricted. A perfect example of this is the AR-15 (i.e. M16 / C-7). If your looking at something like Milsurp, Shotgun, Hunting Rifle, those are most likely non-restricted.

As for going out to the bush and shooting. Around my area, as I've come to find out, there are dedicated ranges to go to for shooting almost anything a man can carry. Having only belonged to one range so far (and going back soon) I can't comment on prices for use, limitations on ranges as these and other factors vary from range to range, province to province. Choosing a range will depend on you. As for shooting out the back window into the forest type of shooting....well around here, hunting with a licence obviously is the only way of shooting outside of a range. Whether you can get away with shooting outside a range for the fun of it on a hunters licence...I can't tell you that. YOu'd have to ask your local Legal beagle type firearm owners.

If you don't have your Restricted and you try to purchase a firearm on the Restricted list....not going to happen legally. As well, to purchase a Restricted firearm of any kind, you need to be apart of an acceptable range.

The last thing we all need is someone subverting the system. Thats why we have all the problems that we face these days. From ownership, to registry, to usage, everything we do is scrutinized and monitored. If you want to move a firearm to your range, you got to call the CFC and let them know how long your going to be gone with it. When your planning on getting home and leaving, etc and of course, where your taking it. Now I'm not sure, but I think that if your a hunter, you still have to do the same thing, but its more relaxed.
Why do we have to jump through all these hoops. Its because ppl have subverted the system, people have shot up schools, illegal gun usage and ownership (drug dealers for example). People who do these things affect the good guys like myself and these other ppl here. All I'm sayin is, don't become one of them. Stay as legal as you can. Follow the rules always. Keep your nose clean. Trust me, its easier than you think.


Now, I'm no legal begal, so some of what I've said is a little off, but in general, its all correct. Follow the rules and play nice and you'll get exactly what you want as a fellow shooter.

I always play by the rules. The range I mentioned is set up with a bench for public use, and have only patterened by shotgun, or sighted my xbow there. but yes I am looking for a rifle that I can use practically, shoots well, looks appealing to me, and is legal. And I know my setup is somewhere. I just find that everything I "want" to use is impossible! understandably though of course. I didnt mean that I would try to purchase or shoot a rifle illegally either, lol I just meant that if I had to I would get my license! sorry.

I did look at the Tavor though, I like the looks and sounds of it. And if I was to just see it I would think it is automatically restriced or prohibited. I just dont know all the ground rules, what I can get, what I can use and where I can use it. But thanks for some of the resources, and also looking around the site it wont take me long to get set up.
 
Just my $.02, but I see where you're coming from Krippler. Its a really frustrating thing to search for a nice lookin' gun, then try to figure out why you can't have one. Remeber the following, and you'll be farther ahead:

If the barrel is less than 18.5 inches or the total length is less than 26 inches it is restricted or prohibited.

If it is a handgun and shoots .25 or .32 cal its prohib. ( or for competition)

If it can be/was fully auto it is prohib.

Here's the kicker......wait for it......

If it looks mean , or cool, or looks a little evil, it might be prohibited/restricted BECAUSE THEY SAID SO.

Check these features first, then check the master list under the CFC website. There is a long list of restricted/prohib. firearms there.

Don't despair. Choosing a gun is fun. Take your time . Surf through the pics. Enjoy.

Lastly, Take the resticted course. It supports the idea that Canadians , law abiding ones, DO want to own guns legally and responsibly.

and if you don't want to drop the big ones for a travor buy a Norinco M-14. Not quite as cool to some but $2500 cheaper!:rockOn:

I don't know where you hunt or what regulations you have as far as your ranges go. There is no need and/or requirement to inform your local LE about your intentions with your non restricted firearms. On a federal level there is no requirement to inform anyone. The same goes for your restricted firearms, with a twist. Lock your gun, lock the gun in a case, remember your PAL, registration and ATT and away you go. I've never had to call anyone to inform them of where, when and how long I would be gone. This may not be the case in all provinces, however I find it hard to believe if it isn't.

Without a hunting license you can still shoot in the sticks. You can even varmint hunt without a hunting license.

The AR platform as well as others that can be legally owned are NOT assault rifles. Assault rifles are intermediate calibre rifles, usually 40" or shorter, and must be SELECT FIRE. Meaning capable of semi and full auto/burst fire. Nothing that can be legally owned in Canada is an Assault rifle. The term "assault rifle" is a buzz word used by the media to induce fear and sell copies or promote ratings. Anything semi auto is classified as an "assault rifle" according to the media.

All rifles are only rifles unless they are used in a violent act or action. Then they may be labelled as assault rifles. Firearms are firearms not weapons. They are only weapons when used as such. For most of us we could care less what others call them. However, in the eyes of those less educated on firearms and their owners the designation used most often is the one that will be consumed as truth. It is in our best interest as shooters to leave the buzz words and inaccurate titles out of our vocabulary and hopefully out of the media's as well.

I am surprised Armedsask didn't mention it. But if 3 grand is a little pricey for a bullpup you can always spend $1500 for a tricked out AR180B-2

Sorry I don't have any pics of it in the original. Just too damn ugly.

I put an ACE Skeleton folding stock on it. Has a MI four rail fore end, Stormwerkz scope rail with a Tapco tactical scope.

It is cool, scary and evil looking. Uses Ar mags, shoots outstanding and best of all, is non restricted. Go figure:D

What about the FN 2000 and the Norinco type 97? I thought at least the type 97 was non-restricted? Or just wait for the FG 42 to show up at marstar and sell your internal organs before hand.:p ... Man I want it...

FN2000 is restricted due to barrel length. The Type 97 isn't available yet, nor is the FG42. Better luck next time, chuckle head.
 
Yah, I spend a lot of time in my own personal little world, where prohibited is a dirty word that is punishable by having to sleep with wendy cukier. I've gotten to touch the type 97 though, so it's available enough for me.
 
Was all this not covered on your PAL course? Start by going to the CFC's web site or calling your MP and having them send you a copy of the laws.
"...Is that even possible?..." Chalk River, Ontario right? You have to comply with the hunting regs as well as the firearms laws. If you're in the bush, in Ontario, with any firearm and are stopped/approached by a Conservation Officer, you are assumed to be hunting. No hunting licence and you can be(and likely will be) charged with hunting without a licence. Have a firearm that isn't suitable for whatever game that is in season(IE a .308 in rabbit season) and you can be(and likely will be) charged with hunting out of season. Having a range set up might make this go away, but if you're wandering around, you're toast. Even with a .22.

You won't be able to buy anything that's 'prohibited' either. Ever. The cut off date for being 'grandfathered' for prohibited handguns was 1 Dec 98.
"...steyr ssg..." An SSG will cost you a fortune, IF you can find one. Think in terms of several grand.
"...winchester 700..." It's a Winchester Model 70 and a Remington Model 700. Either one will do nicely and not cost you a ton of money. Don't discount buying a used rifle. You really have to work at damaging any commercial hunting rifle.
"...sleep with wendy cukier..." Wouldn't be so bad if you were drunk enough and you could get her to shut the hell up.
