I was under the impression shotguns like rifles had to have a 18.5" barrel to be non restricted. i was at the local shop the other day and they had a 14" shotgun and he said it was non restricted, so im a little confussed. can someone explaine this to me?

I have a 12.5 and a 8.5 barrel and are both non restricted, for shotguns its the overall length that is measured to determine if its restricted or non-restricted. But I believe the barrel has to be made by manufactured by a company if its shorter then 18.5. If you just grab your shotgun and cut the barrel down it has to be above 18.5

In order for a shotgun to be restricted, it must either (a) be a semi-auto with a barrel below 18 1/2 inches in length or (b) be capable of still being fired when reduced below the minimum legal overall length by temporary means, such as a folding or telescoping stock.

Manual action shotguns must have a barrel of 18 inches or longer, unless manufactured shorter. So you CANNOT cut a barrel to 17.9", but you can buy one that is 8.5". Make sense? Welcome to Canadian firearm regulations.

now THAT is some confusing sh1t. There was a thread on here (posted not too long ago) of a guy that took his friends shotgun and did a complete make-over, including shortening the barrel, it's a non-restricted.

I thought that was strange because you would be changing the length of the barrel, but everyone is telling me that it's completely legal.

Now I see that you are saying it's the other way around :eek::confused::confused:

to be on the safe side original poster, buy from a retailer, don't do ANYTHING to your firearms. Everyone seems to know the law, the chance for you now is betting on who is right, and who is wrong.

The laws are not meant to be understood, they are not meant to be black and white. A day with a firearm is one step closer to jail, and we won't even know why or how it happened! This is our law, roll the dice!:mad:

You can cut it, as short as you want, as long as you want to cut it 18 inches or longer :)

Over 18 inches, and it's fine, it's only prohib if you cut it shorter than that. Cut a 30 inch to 20 inch, fine. Cut a 28 inch to 19 inch, swell. Cut a 26 inch to 17 inches, better start buying your soap on a rope.

Or you could buy a manufactured barrel as short as 6.5 inches, and be non-restricted with a full stock.

baaaa, that's fine. you can take all the advice you want of an internet forum, especially when your life is at stake.

Either get the answers from the people who make the law, a lawyer, or take your chances and read all the contradictory advice on CGN. you choose.
