Newb SXS ejector question

Just got an Ugartechea shotgun off a guy in the EE. I was specifically looking for ejectors not extractors. Got the SXS that was supposed to have ejectors and when I put dummy rounds in it to test the ejectors it only extracted them:mad:. Now, I'm new to SXS doubles so am I missing something? Do I have to fire the rounds first for the ejectors to work? Or should they work every time?

If it has ejectors it should eject a dummy if it doesn't it will just extract them.
 
This may seem like a stupid question but did you dry fire the gun using the dummy rounds before testing the extractor/ejector?
 
Yes, you do have to fire the "rounds" for ejectors to be active. The ejector is designed to only lift unfired shells. Test ejectors with snap caps or once-fired empty hulls.

So if I load two shells, don't fire them and then open the action ,they will extract only? If I actually fire the shells, then open the action they will eject (if the gun truely has ejectors)?
 
the gun has to be fired for the ejectors to work, otherwise both chambers would empty with ejectors if just one shot was fired. the barrel that fired will eject, the one that didn't will just extract. the only shotgun that ejects an unfired shell, is the cooey mod.840 and possibly a c.i.l. mod. 402. if you load two shells and don't fire they will just extract. yes
 
For ease of identification.....on a non-ejector gun the extractor is a single metal component that forms part of the rim of the chambers. As the gun is opened this is projected outwards slightly to present the cartridge cases for removal.

On an ejector gun, the extractor (that single piece of matal) is split in two, one part for each barrel (obviously in the case of a sxs or o/u....not really sure how those are designed on Drillings etc :) ).

If the gun has not been fired and is opened these will act just like an extractor, lifting the unfired cases up sufficiently for them to be easily removed. Firing one or both barrels activates a trip mechanism for the ejector system and spring power will throw the empty case away from the gun.

May not be out of place to mention, that many makes/models provide the user the ability to switch from ejectors to extractors and vice versa.

Thanks for all the posts - I tried my snap caps again and pulled both triggers ejectors work fine.:redface: This thing is so tightly built that except for a fine line down the middle of the ejectors, I couldn't tell if it was split! The action locks up so tight it wouldn't close on a piece of paper.....
 
not to hijack the thread but is the a short coach style sxs with ejectors? Most I have looked at only have extractors. Is this a requirement of cowboy action events to only have extractors? I want a nice short coach gun the has ejectors.

If there's one out there I couldn't find it. Baikal makes a SXS with ejectors but it deosn't have double triggers and you'd have to cut it down (it also costs $600 new). I suspect most guys who buy these guns reload and extractors are a more attractive selling feature than ejectors. I've been looking for a SXS with ejectors (at a reasonable price) for awhile - they just aren't as popular as extractor models.
