Hi there, new to this site. Looks like I should have joined up decades ago... right up my alley.

Anywho, I'm looking to buy another 30-06 for my brother for X-mas. I have a few favorites as far as makes, but was hoping for some recommendations & to find a good used one for around the $400 mark. I have a few sights that I could throw on there for him, but need to find an entry level rifle so he can hunt with me next year.
Any ideas of where I can find one? I'm in Vancouver, so the amazing used hunting supply stores in Ontario probably won't work so well.

Thanks in advance.

You can pick up a new entry level rifle for less than $400. Take a look at the Marlin XL7, i just bought a XS7 (same gun, just short action) in 7mm-08. I like it. It has an adjustable trigger that's surprisingly good. Less than $400. Alot of people also like the stevens 200 for a few bucks less, but I think the better trigger on the Marlin pays for the $20 diffference between the two!

Pretty hard to beat Tradex, and they might be able to get a rifle to you in time for Christmas. I'd vote for a Husqvarna 1600, it makes your budget, they are usually in pretty good shape, and the ones I've seen shoot.

I recently got a mailer from International Shooting Supplies in Surrey, that indicates all, in stock firearms are on sale, so you might find something there. Dave Jennings at Jennings Outdoor Sports (250-577-3244) in Pritchard BC often has a selection of used guns.

By the way welcome to CGN.

Was gonna lock this for being in the wrong forum but hey it's Christmas and the poor newbie is trying to find his brother a gun and.....

Am I getting soft?

Maybe I'll go ban Dill again, it always makes me feel better.

I would say that the new Marlin would be the way to go, and Clay at Prophet river would probably be able to get you one quick................don't know about Christmas quick at this point. He goes by sakoalberta on the site.

Noted and copied in case I get any future infractions......

I think that was for Dec 5 only. I was in there last Thursday and only the Brownings were on sale.

Now I know how you got your handle, lol.

Missezula,
2x on Tradex. Anthony is a great guy to deal with. Explain to him what you are looking for & he will hook you up with a great used 30-06.

Used is probably your best bet, there's no doubt.

However - there's a hell of a lot of people who sing the praises of the inexpensive savage or stevens rifles which can be had for at or under your budget. Sure - they're not the prettiest and they're not the most rugged ever built, but guys consistently say that they shoot like crazy and are very reliable.

I notice cabela's canada has some savage packages on for 425, and some stevens for less.

So you might want to check that out if you're determined to get 'new'.

Done and DONE!

Wow, thanks for all the help! What an introduction to CGN! With all the help, I ended up getting a used Hussqvarna 30-06 (slightly over my budget, but very worth it). I will certainly be using Tradex in the future as they seem to have some great deals and info.

I remember getting my first hunting rifle like it was yesterday (actually it was 18 years ago on my 16th x-mas from my grandfather...) but am happy to say I will get to watch my brothers face when he opens this present. I'm excited to be able to share future hunting stories with him, rather than just telling him the stories when I wish he had been there...

This forum was a great help (especially the PM's that came through). I'm a CGN lifer. Merry Chrismas!

Trev.
