Newbie - 2 Restricteds Bought, What Other Kit to Start?

Complete Newbie to Handguns and very little experience with any firearms other than some basic shotgun hunting as a kid. Just purchased my first two restricteds a CZ SP-01 Shadow as well as a GSG 1911-22 to get me started, just need my rpal to be finalized so I can finish the transaction, but wanted to get them purchased to get ahead of likely coming price increases. The CZ comes with three mags so I'm thinking that should be plenty for now, the GSG only comes with one so I would imagine I'll want to purchase a few more. Is the Universal Mag Loaders something I should be buying or are these a gimmick that most don't use?

So far I have a couple of pairs of safety glasses as well as two sets of ear muffs. I know I'll need a couple of trigger locks as well as a safe/cabinet and also a couple of padlocks for the transport cases but beyond that I'm looking for what other kit I should be looking to put in the range bag at this point? Cleaning supplies? anything else I should be considering? Also is there any point to purchasing a holster until I plan to try getting my Black Badge and getting involved in IPSC once I figure out how to shoot? When at the range I would assume the gun will either be being shot or on the bench and not in a holster?

+1. Don't cheap out on your cleaning supplies. Stay away from the cheap cleaning kits with the aluminum rods. they are junk. Get a decent rod (Dewey or Tiptons carbon fiber are my personal faves) and some good brass jags and brushes. Solvents and oils are like beer. There are tons to choose from and a lot of it comes down to personal taste, so to say. Talk to some shooters down at your club for some recommendations. You'll find some that work for you.

And Garonimus is also bang on about the mag loader. Loading the 22 isn't bad but after a long day at the range with the CZ your thumbs are gonna hate you. The Maglula Uplula is a Godsend.
 
Get a range bag.

I'm an odd duck. I like to simplify things.
My wife bought me a nice BIG range bag for Christmas. I thought it was a little TOO big, but after I got most of the things I use normally into it for a range day, plus my cleaning tools, it was just big enough.
I leave ALL my cleaning supplies in it. Just in case you're at the range/farm/crown land, and you need to clean the bore, or your accidentally drop a firearm in the mud. Or god forbid, you forget to clean the firearm after the LAST day at the range, and wanna clean it before you shoot that day.
Plus when at home, when it's time to clean the firearms, I just pull the bag out, and everythings there.
Throw a photocopy of your RPAL, ATT and Registrations for ALL firearms in the range bag too. Then you never have to hunt for them if stopped by the cops at a RIDE check or something.
As for holsters, I'd recommend waiting until you're ready for Competition shooting then ask advice of those in the competitions. Some brands/types/styles may be better then others for each competition style.

ps- I second.. third... whatever.. I also concur that the mag loaders are needed. On my .45's, not so much so, but my my 9mm.. those springs are TIGHT. The mag loader just makes loading easy.
 
First off you did the right thing and bought a 22. You will enjoy the shooting sport more , because you can afford it and spend more time at the range to practice. The big thing is to have fun. Center fire now you open your wallet, especially if you bring friends I guarantee you that most gun nutz will tell you. All your friends want to shoot hand guns But ammo is not cheap. A day at the range can cost you 200 bucks Buy your traveling case and storage safe a decent cleaning kit trigger locks You are not to show anybody off. Meet the requirements for our laws. This is called GUN NUTZ do you think that these guys have a couple of hand guns? NOT My buddies will tell you that your in for an addiction Next will be reloading and the guys will help you there Welcome to the GUN NUT world. Weather you buy Norc or colts. Put guns in your safe I can't tell you how many people I have taken to the range and now have there RPAL Good to see more Res shooter and Non Res shooters WE need to arm all Canadians LOL If that will ever happen Welcome to CGN age
 
I see no mention of ammo in that list. And ammo is by far the most important accessory.... :d

I second the choice of a GOOD cleaning rod like the Dewey or other proper one. Not cheap but it'll last a lifetime compared to the others that seem to get kinked or snap off the threaded stubs all too easily.

For all that folks go on and on about cleaning products and oils really they all do a darn good job. Try a few and go with something that works well for you. Just be wary of anything that fully strips away the oils and greases as it means you need to ensure the surfaces are re-oiled or otherwise protected.

One special product I'm quickly becoming a believer in is EEZOX. It's a combination cleaner and dry film lubricant. Rimfire semi autos are especially messy and the fouling mixes with regular oils and greases to form rather nasty sludge and gunk. The ideal of a dry lube which actually works well is that the fouling will remain as a powder and not mess things up. So far it's working well on the first rimfire pistol I've tried. I'm hoping it'll extend the cleaning needed out to once every 500'ish rounds instead of once ever 250 to 300.


Actually the CZ gets pretty messy inside come to think of it. If this stuff works out I may try it on my own CZ's.
