Hey Guys!!
I'm new to the AR world and I'm looking at getting my feet wet. I'd like to know what you guys think would be a good AR for a reasonable price. I don't want anything too expensive but I don't want to buy the cheapest either if it's going to be junk. Only thing I know is that I want one in 223. Looking mostly for plinking and getting into 3 gun matches.

Thanks for your help!

Bang for the buck AR's would be Stag or Rock River Arms.

What ever you do, don't hang too many accessories on the rifle. Common newbie mistake.

Lightly used off the EE Norinco with Magpul furniture, Bushnell RDS. After the Extractor upgrade (30$) perfect function and more than accurate enough for me and CQB. I have less then $600 into this rifle.
Good place to start. At any time you could sell it and recover your money, should you wish to upgrade.

if you are interested in 3 gun I would get a rifle designed for 3 gun. if you buy something "tactical", you may end up spending a lot more modifying it once you see what everyone else is running.

Daniel defense is great, stag 3g is nice.

I believe a competition rifle should be DI, have an upgraded trigger, geissele or jp, 16" or longer barrel, free float handguard and a good comp. I personally have no time for adjustable stocks, but im not very cool anyways.

Nothing wrong with Norinco or Dominion Arms AR 15 for a starter. They are cost effective, easily reliable enough and will support a number of accessories as your experience grows. When and if you want to move up to a higher quality rifle, they are easy to re-sell. Bottom line is your budget up front really.

Get a Norc or DA. If you enjoy the AR platform and move up later you will have this as a spare, loaner or a beater AR. If you can find a used one upgraded a little, you can save a few bucks.

Approximately 300 rounds through mine and no issues.

Or you can save yourself frustration and do what I did. I had a Colt AR-15. yeah it's fun banging away the .223 ammo, but after awhile you start to want something that will actually group well at 100 to 300 meters and beyond, so I sold mine and got a Remington 700 heavy barrel in ,223, put on a Leopold 6 to 20 power scope and now have something that shoots 5 shot dime size or smaller groups at 100 meters and quarter sized groups or smaller at 200 meters. Yeah I know if you throw enough dollars at a AR based rifle, they can be made to shoot...
Since in Canada you can only legally use 5 shot clips in an AR, what is the point of them anymore? I just got a Beretta CX-4 in 9mm for spraying lead. It shoots my home cast bullet loads very accurrately, so it is cheap to shoot.

DD are great, and there are a few deals on the EE.

For new budget AR I recommend CORE from Wanstalls or Wolverine. Decent price and lifetime warranty, even if second hand. Colt, DD and Stag are very good, but a fee more bucks.

If $ is an issue Norc and DA go bang everytime. Fit and finish isn't as nice as any of the ones I suggested, but they work!

ps: it's the magazine that is controlled. As such it is legal to use a 10 round LAR pistol mag in an AR, as it is legal to use a .50 Beowulf mag in an AR. I'll see your 10 rounds in your Storm and raise you an additional 6 in a Beo mag...

So how's your Remington 700 do in 3 gun competitions? and like Phat Eagle already stated it's the magazines that are controlled, so running a 10Rd. AR pistol mag in an AR rifle is legal.

Finally if you pick the right AR in the first place (cough CDN. Colt, KAC, LMT, DD) then little to no extra money need be spent to get MOA accuracy or better...

Cheers D

I am also new to the AR game and didn't have alot of money to spend. New family man. I got a dpms upper of EE then waited and bought a lower on EE. IT seems you really can't go wrong with ever you purchase. All the guys that say buy a DD for your first one don't listen to. You the same as me have no idea if your going to even like Ar's. Buy what you can afford and try it out

Well... I legally shoot 15 round "clips" in my AR so I don't know where you have been for the past few years... I can pop clays at 200 yards all day long with my Colt and cheap xm855 that's plenty accurate for me. Why do you need a .25 moa rifle anyway?

Different strokes for different folks I guess. I get semi auto's as I do have a Beretta CX-4 and a Kel Tec Sub 2000 both in 9MM. I hand load and shoot home cast bullets out of each, so both are cheap decent range toys with decent accuracy to 100 meters, especially the Bertta when I drop a scope on it. It will certainly hit clay targets all day with a low power scope on it at 100 meters and the 200 meter gong.

I do also like hightly accurate rifles, so besides the Remington 700 heavy barrel I also have a Savage Model 12 LRPV Left Port in 204 Ruger which is proving out to be even better than the Remington especially at 300 + meters.

The .223 is a highly accurate round inherently, really amazing actually what it will do out of any good quality bolt gun. The 204 Ruger took a lot more experimentation to get it to shoot as well and seems to take more trweaking, but once you find the load, amazingly flat shooting, very noticably better at 300 plus yards compared to .223

I guess it is the philosophy of placing one well placed shot versus spraying off a clip, but again I have the 9mm semi's when I feel in the mood to do that.

My only point was that for a new shooter, don't eliminate bolt guns when considering the .223 round. If you are going to compete in a competition that requires semi's, that is a different matter.

Guess it's great we can all buy what works for us as individuals best.
