can someone give me a run down on chokes: what type for different uses, can slugs only be fired from cylinder bore? what are all the different typed of chokes.

Basically just looking to educate myself before I buy a scatter gun:)

specifically I am interested in a coach gun and notice that many come with fixed chokes so I want to make sure I get the right config.

And where is the choke located: breech or muzzle end of the barrel?

The choke is located on the part of the shotgun you don't want to be in front of.

the baikal coach gun comes with screw in chokes. yes slugs can be fired from a cylinder bore. the chokes are extra full, full, impoved modified, modified, skeet II,improvrd cylinder, cylindder

my question was not whether slugs can be fired from cylinder bore, but can slugs be fired only from a cylinder bore. Or in other words what chokes can I use slugs with?

yes you can fire slugs from other chokes. generally slugs will perform better from a more open choke. you can even shoot them from a full choke. it used to said that it would damage the barrel, but i've never really seen that from a full choke.

The choke is just inside the muzzle. Slugs are lead. You can fire them out of any choke, but they work best out of an improved cylinder or cylinder choke.
Extra full is for turkey.
Full, ducks and geese.
Impoved modified and Modified, upland birds and small game.
Skeet, targets(skeet and trap shooting).
Improved cylinder and cylinder, upland birds, small game, slugs.
Cylinder is really no choke at all.
Was this not covered in your Pal course?
The Stoeger comes standard with a modified and improved cylinder. Extra choke tubes can be had.
Marstar doesn't say what chokes are on the Norinco.
The Russian Baikal comes with two cylinder chokes or full and modifed or improved cylinder.

didn't take the course, just challenged the tests. But I must admit I never even thought to look in the books.

I was looking for a break down on what choke was used for the different types of game and what not so thanks for that:)

Full - leave it in your Trap vest.
Mod - bring it along when you go goose hunting, just in case.
IC - seized in the barrel, it's been in there so long.
Skeet - I'd buy one and try it, except that the IC tube works great for pretty much everything.

Just to re-ask, are slugs ok out of a full-choke?
