Hello. I just purchased two No1 MKIII Enfields, both sporters. I want to convert at least one of them back to military wood.

Is is possible to buy the "wrong" wood kit? Are say No1 wood kits different from No4 wood kits? There are lots of No4 kits available on eBay for example, but very few No1, and the ones available are 4X the cost.

Thanks in advance.

No.1 wood is totally different than No.4 wood. I'd be careful buying any of the wood sets on e-bay, too. The ones I've seen there are the soft, splintery Indian wood. It doesn't hold up well to extended use. But, if you can get it cheaply enough....... It's still better than sporter wood.

ki11, there are a few good places to get stuff to refurb your Enfields. It's a fun project, but as mentioned above, it's easy to get lost and spend too much. PM me this weekend if you'd like to piggy back on a parts order, I'm about to place one :)

Here's a start - what is involved in refurbishing:

Yes I actually have your project page bookmarked for reference. I received in 2 Enfields in, one I'll probably keep as is for hunting, and the other one is in really poor shape. (bolt is broken right out of the box, but I already ordered the parts in to fix it; an Enfield bolt tool and main spring X5) So I'd like to get the mechanical parts fixed first.

The 2nd question I had is some people indicate to immerse the metal parts in either boiling water or oil to clean them. (these Enfields I have need a serious field cleaning before even shooting) What do people around here typically do?
