Hey guys,

Just wanted to say hi and ask the local gurus for some help in the right direction.

I'm in the process of getting my PAL but in the mean time i'm trying to do some research on guns. Problem is I don't know where to start :(

I'm looking for 2 rifles. They both have to be Non-Restricted. Any caliber. No more than 1500$ each (maybe up to 2k for 1 of them).

The first one is for the range. Basically something precise with a bigger ammo capacity and the second one is for hunting so i'd like a very durable/rugged one that can handle the elements( +40 to -40, rain or shine).

Right now i'm stuck on the restricted/non-restricted issue and to date all i have found was the 10/22, M-14 and the SKS, but not much on their qualities.

Any help in the right direction would be GREATLY appreciated. I'll continue the research from there.

Glad to be here

Welcome to the group.
You should be able to find a great target rifle with high accuracy easily on this site. check Alberta tactical rifle they have alot of custom high accuracy rifles.
as for the other gun i would go with a SKS or a CZ 858 because the ammo is so cheap and they are non restricted, makes it a good fun cheap gun.

Rifles

What are you planning to hunt? What type of terrain will you be in? What are the ranges you will be target shooting at.

Not sure that a high capacity magazine is the ticket for the range. Many ranges will limit you to one cartridge in the chamber and none in the mag, for safety reasons. Also, do you want to get into match shooting, long range target shooting, or just plinking?

There is no reason why, at first, your range rifle cannot also be your hunting rifle. Get a good used one, suitable for the type of huntinmg that you intend to get into, and learn to use it. then, once you really get the bug, you can get something else. Not necessarily to replace the firsy one, but to complement it.

Cheers.

Thanks for the welcome guys.

One cartridge :( . We really are a bunch on pansies here. When I went to Louisiana, no joke, I walked into a gun range, asked to rent a .357 magnum, a lane and bought 50 rounds + paper target, then proceeded to have fun, safely of course.

That's when I caught the bug, however I learn that i enjoy long range shooting in the process. I'll maybe do a bit of plinking here and there.

For the moment I think I might stick only with target shooting, hunting might come later and if I buy, I buy new. But that's just me, I can't buy anything used just because I don't know how it was used before and it drives me nuts. Instead I shell out the money for new and make dam sure I take stellar care of my own stuff.

I've narrowed my choice to a couple but i'm still trying to figure out which ones are better for me.

Although I am a novice, I'd suggest a 10 22.
They are not expensive (got mine used for 150$), .22LR is cheep and the aftermarket has a ridiculous amount of add on parts.
So far I've changed the stock, added a bi-pod, a scope and picked up a couple 25 round clips. Ruger quality is excellent as well, haven't had any serious problems yet.
