Newbie from Ottawa, could use a few tips!

Hey everyone

I stumbled on this site through a local car forum.
I recently took the course and am waiting for my PAL. I will be taking the hunting license in october.

I currently have an old Cooey Model 60 .22 repeater. Before they had serial numbers so most likely 1903-1950.
I also have a Win 30-30 model 1894.

I will be getting these registered as soon as possible, everything will be done by the book.

I am planning on going for deer, possibly migrating bird, turkey, maybe bear up north.. I work with a few avid hunters and they are already planning lots for me.

I am thinking of picking up a Remington 870 once my paperwork falls through.
Only slug allowed in our Area for deer. Area 65 I beleive.

I would also like to acquire one or two WW2 era rifles for range use.
I would also likely use them for Coyote/Wolves during winter as it is a problem around here.

I am looking for suggestions of any kind, some help with choosing older rifles would be great. I've already done lots of reading on this site and am already somewhat experienced with firearms/hunting (From up north). My lack of paperwork is a big problem to me but I'm working on that seriously.

As far a buying from another member, I'm not sure how it is supposed to be done, any procedure I can read somewhere?

before buying from another member , please read the stickies in general firearms discussion forum and in the EE FAQ on top of EE section .

as for the older firearms , visit the milsurp section and for SKS goto the red rifles secition .
 
Hello and welcome. You probably should be having a discussion like this in one or two of the other forums. You're in a forum that's just used for introductions. So -- hello and welcome. I used to live in Idaho and also had coyote problems. I used a Chinese SKS and found it very good at relatively short ranges. Enjoy the site.

You'll find a lot of good info in a lot of different threads.
Get registered in the Equipment Exchange and browse that for interesting stuff.
You may also find that you will become interested in other shooting activities and disciplines.

"...Before they had serial numbers..." Hi. Prior to 1968. Not that it really matters.
"...Remington 870..." Look into a 'Combo'. Can come with a slug barrel(fully rifled or not) and a Remchoked barrel. Remchoked means the chokes can be changed as opposed to buying several barrels with fixed chokes. That gets pricey. Choke tubes run between $19.95 for a Modified to $32.95 for an Extra Full Turkey choke. Plus $10 for the wrench.
A 26" Remchoked barrel runs $190 by itself. A 20" rifled barrel runs $200.00.
An 870 Express Combo with a 20" rifled barrel and a 26" bird barrel runs about $535.
Milsurps will depend on where your interest lies. For coyotes/wolves, I'd be thinking a 6.5 x 55 Mauser if you plan on saving the hides. Bit easier on the hides and your shoulder vs something like a .303 or .308. However, there is little or no milsurp ammo around for that cartridge. Not much for any milsurp except 7.62 x 39 out of an SKS. Neat rifles, but not terribly accurate.
Your .30-30, with 165 or 170 grain bullets, will do nicely for deer or bear with the same ammo. In a WMU that allows rifles, of course.
"...My lack of paperwork..." There are some instructors who do the PAL course and the Hunter's Safety course at the same time(do the RPAL course at the same time too. Even if you're not planning on handguns right now. Save you some time and money.). Don't know who in Ottawa though. Go to the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters site for courses. They run the Hunter's Safety courses for the government.
